Overview

About the Lantronix FOX Series

The FOX Series (FOX3 and FOX4, also written FOX 3 and FOX 4) is an all-in-one vehicle telematics gateway that reads data from the vehicle, processes it locally and sends only what matters over cellular. It connects directly to ECUs and sensors over CAN, RS-232, RS-485 and 1-Wire, tracks position with multi-channel GNSS (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS) and logs history to 8 MB of onboard flash, so fleet operators get location, engine and driver data without bolting together separate trackers and modems.

Every model runs 4G LTE: LTE-M/NB-IoT on most SKUs and LTE Cat-1 on F44 models, with 2G fallback on many regional variants. Interfaces include three user-configurable digital/analog I/Os, a dedicated ignition input, two RS-232 ports or one RS-232 plus one RS-485, I2C, 1-Wire with 5 V phantom power and USB 2.0. Power input is 10.8 to 60 VDC, with 50 mA typical draw at 12 VDC and under 1 mA in sleep. The unit operates from -40°C to +85°C.

FOX4 adds Bluetooth 5.2, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, secure boot and an ATEC608 secure element, and the F43R20FS adds GNSS dead reckoning for tunnels and dense urban areas. Logic runs at the edge in PFAL or LUA scripts, data goes to the cloud over MQTT with SSL/TLS 1.3, and fleets are provisioned and monitored through Lantronix Percepxion or configured locally with Lantronix Workbench.

Key capabilities

Direct vehicle bus access
CAN, RS-232, RS-485 and 1-Wire inputs read ECU, tachograph (FMS), RPM, temperature and fuel-level data without an external protocol converter.
Dead reckoning option
The F43R20FS pairs GNSS with dead reckoning to keep position accuracy in tunnels and urban canyons where satellite signals drop out.
Edge scripting cuts data cost
PFAL or LUA scripts filter and normalize telemetry on the device, so only the data you need crosses the cellular link.
10.8 to 60 VDC input
Accepts 10.8 to 60 VDC straight from the vehicle supply, drawing about 50 mA at 12 VDC in normal operation and under 1 mA in sleep mode.
FOX4 security hardware
FOX4 models add secure boot and an ATEC608 secure element alongside AES and SSL/TLS 1.3 encryption of transmitted data.
BLE sensors and Wi-Fi
FOX4 includes Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 4 for wireless sensors that report ID, movement, magnetic detection and temperature; selected FOX3 models offer BLE 4.1.

How to choose the right FOX Series part number

F33 part numbers are FOX3 (LTE-M/NB1, no Wi-Fi); F43 are FOX4 LTE-M/NB2 and F44 are FOX4 LTE Cat-1 for Europe. A 5 in the fifth character (F33H502S, F43H502S) means one RS-232 plus one RS-485 instead of two RS-232. On FOX3, B01 suffixes add the backup battery (F33H002B01 vs F33H002S) and GZ models add BLE 4.1. Region codes: F33H007S, F43H207S and F43H507S are Japan builds; F43H20FS and F43H50FS are worldwide. F43R20FS adds dead reckoning. Numbers 1000000 to 1000104 are software premium features; 600xx are cables and extension boxes.

FOX Series FAQ

What is the difference between FOX3 and FOX4?

Both share the same interfaces, 10.8 to 60 VDC input and -40°C to +85°C rating. FOX4 adds Bluetooth 5.2, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 4, secure boot and an ATEC608 secure element, plus wider LTE band support. FOX3 models are LTE-M/NB1, with BLE 4.1 only on the GZ variants.

Which FOX model supports dead reckoning?

F43R20FS is the dead reckoning variant. It is a FOX4 LTE-M/NB2 unit with two RS-232 ports, BLE 5.2, Wi-Fi 4 and a backup battery, and it keeps estimating position when GNSS signals are lost in tunnels or dense urban areas.

Can the FOX gateway read CAN bus and OBDII data?

Yes. FOX has a CAN-Bus interface that uses two of its three I/Os, and the CAN BUS premium feature (1000005) covers CH/FMS/OBDII. The 60286 cable connects to OBDII-compliant vehicles with a separate ignition wire.

What power input does the FOX telematics gateway need?

FOX accepts 10.8 to 60 VDC. Average draw is 50 mA at 12 VDC in normal operation and under 1 mA in sleep mode. An internal 1000 mAh rechargeable backup battery is fitted on battery-equipped part numbers.

What does the FOX4-PROMO evaluation kit include?

The FOX4-PROMO kit includes installation cables 60048, 60353, 60044 and 60286, external cellular and GNSS antennas, an evaluation box, a power supply, a USB-to-serial converter and all premium features. The FOX gateway itself is sold separately.
