Overview

About the Lantronix FOX5 Series

The FOX5 (also written FOX 5) connects assets that speak operational protocols, such as generators, HVAC plants, fuel tanks, compressors and commercial vehicles, to cloud applications. It reads Modbus over RS-485 or RS-232, CAN bus with J1939, 1-Wire and BLE 5.4 sensors, filters and normalizes the data on the device, then publishes it over LTE with MQTT. Lantronix lists it as a new product and targets cell-site, rental-equipment and fleet deployments.

Two models share the same hardware: F54R000S for North America on bands B2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14 and 66, and F54R00FS for the rest of the world with a 21-band Cat 1 bis list. Positioning uses multi-channel GPS and GLONASS with dead reckoning and an accelerometer, rated at 1.5 m GPS accuracy. Input power is 10.8-60 VDC, a 1000 mAh internal battery provides backup, sleep draw is under 2.2 mA at 12 VDC, and the unit operates from -30°C to +85°C.

Edge logic runs as Lua scripts or PFAL programs, with up to 3000 geofences, 2000 waypoints and 200 alarms. A cryptographic co-processor provides a hardware root of trust with secure boot, TLS 1.3 and MQTTS, and Lantronix states the FOX5 is NDAA compliant. Fleets are provisioned and managed through Percepxion.

Key capabilities

Dead-reckoning GNSS
GPS and GLONASS with dead reckoning and a 3-axis accelerometer keep position through tunnels, parking garages and urban canyons.
Vehicle and fieldbus inputs
CAN bus with J1939, RS-485 and RS-232 for Modbus, 1-Wire, I2C and three configurable I/O plus an ignition input.
Lua and PFAL scripting
On-device Lua scripts and PFAL logic filter and process data locally to reduce cellular and cloud costs.
Hardware root of trust
A cryptographic co-processor, secure boot, TLS 1.3 and MQTTS protect devices and data; Lantronix states it is NDAA compliant.
Wide 10.8-60 VDC input
Runs directly from 12 V and 24 V vehicle and equipment power, with an internal 1000 mAh rechargeable backup battery.
Dual nano-SIM
Two nano-SIM holders and internal plus external antennas with automatic or manual switching support resilient cellular links.

How to choose the right FOX5 Series part number

Choose by region. F54R000S is the North American model, LTE Cat 1 bis on B2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14 and 66, with FCC, IC, PTCRB, AT&T, FirstNet and UL certifications listed. F54R00FS is the worldwide model with a 21-band list that adds TDD bands 34, 38, 39, 40 and 41, with CE, UKCA, PSTI, CB, E-Mark and Telec listed. Interfaces, GNSS, battery and software are identical. Lantronix lists installation cables on the same page, including 60353 (8-pin main port with fuse and UCOM) and 60286 (power and OBDII), plus the 60168 combined cellular and GNSS antenna.

FOX5 Series FAQ

What is the difference between F54R000S and F54R00FS?

Only the cellular band set and certifications. F54R000S is for North America (B2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14, 66) with FCC, IC, PTCRB, AT&T and FirstNet listed. F54R00FS is the rest-of-world model with 21 bands and CE, UKCA, E-Mark and Telec listed.

Does the FOX5 read vehicle CAN bus data?

Yes. It has one CAN-bus interface supporting J1939, plus an ignition input. Lantronix also lists a power and OBDII connection cable, 60286, for OBDII-compliant vehicles.

What is the FOX5 operating temperature and power input?

Operating and storage range is -30°C to +85°C. Input power is 10.8 to 60 VDC, drawing 60 mA at 12 VDC in normal operation and under 2.2 mA in sleep. The internal battery discharges from -20°C to +60°C and charges from 0°C to +45°C.

Can I program custom logic on the FOX5?

Yes. It runs Lua scripts and the PFAL programming language on-device, supports up to 3000 geofences, 2000 waypoints and 200 alarms, and handles Modbus, CAN, J1939, MQTT, TCP/UDP, HTTP and SMTP.

What comes in the FOX5 box?

Lantronix lists the FOX5 unit, battery, SIM holder cover, battery cover and screws, and a welcome card. Installation cables and external antennas are separate part numbers.
