Overview
About the Lantronix LM83X
The LM83X (also written LM 83X or LM-83X) is the fifth generation of Lantronix's Local Manager platform. It operates independently from the production network so administrators can monitor, manage and control routers, switches, firewalls and servers over their serial consoles during an outage. Lantronix describes the LM-Series as the only state-aware console servers, an expert system that uses rules-based AI to recover and mitigate network infrastructure automatically.
Every chassis has two 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet interfaces with failover, one SFP port and an RS-232 console port. A 256GB NVMe drive supports TCG Opal 2.0 with 256-bit AES encryption, and USB-A and USB-C ports handle peripherals. One option slot takes RS232, V.92, cellular or fiber cards, while three expansion slots accept serial cards, an 8-port 10/100/1000 Ethernet card and an LCD keypad. Power is dual 100-240 VAC (60 W) or dual -20 to -72 VDC.
Engineers can work through the CLI or the Lantronix Control Center, a single pane of glass for LM-Series fleets that adds automated management actions without scripting, detailed compliance reporting and integration with other NOC tools. Platform features include ROMmon recovery, configuration rollback, virtual serial console ports, out-of-band baseboard management and zero-touch deployment. FIPS 140-2 Level 2 is available.

- The option slot accepts LTE CAT4 modems for AT&T, Verizon, EU/UK/AUS/NZ or global use, and the LEO-500 kit adds Iridium satellite links.
- Dedicated Ethernet expansion
- Models with 8 or 16 dedicated 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports reach management NICs and BMCs alongside serial consoles from the same appliance.
- Automated recovery tools
- ROMmon recovery, configuration rollback and zero-touch deployment let the LM83X restore failed devices without a technician on site.
How to choose the right LM83X part number
In every LM83X part number, the digits before S give the serial port count and the suffix gives the power input. The count runs from 8 (83X-8S-000-NAA) to 104 (83X-104S-555-NAA). NAA means dual AC power and NDA means dual DC, as in 83X-16S-100-NAA versus 83X-16S-100-NDA. The description of each MPN states whether it adds 8 or 16 dedicated Ethernet ports, an LCD module, and 1.5 m or 3 m cables; 83X-24S-E2E-NAA, for example, pairs 24 serial and 16 dedicated Ethernet ports with 1.5 m cables. An X after 83X- (83X-X16S-114-NAA) marks native ports disabled. Expansion modules (83X-8SA, 83X-16SA, 83X-32SA, 83X-8EA, 83X-LCDA) and 88- option cards are ordered separately.

How many devices can a single LM83X console server manage?
Lantronix lists the LM83X as configurable to manage 8 to 104 devices directly over RS-232. Base models are offered at 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96 and 104 serial ports, and serial expansion modules add ports to an existing chassis.
What is the difference between LM83X NAA and NDA part numbers?
NAA models have dual AC power inputs rated 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 60 W. NDA models have dual DC inputs rated -20 to -72 VDC. Port counts and other options are otherwise matched, for example 83X-8S-000-NAA and 83X-8S-000-NDA.
Can I add a cellular modem to the LM83X?
Yes. The single option slot accepts LTE CAT4 internal modems: 88-CAT4ATTA for AT&T, 88-CAT4VA for Verizon, 88-CAT4EUA for EU/UK/AUS/NZ and 88-CAT4GLOBAL. A penta-band HSPA+ modem, a V.92 modem, an RS232 module and Fiber-E SFP modules are also listed for the slot.
What comes in the box with an LM83X?
The LM83X accessory kit contains two power cords (or DC connectors on DC models), two rack-mount ears, four mounting screws, a USB-A to USB-C cable and a connection instruction sheet.
