Overview

About the Lantronix N-GXE-xx-02 Series

The N-GXE-xx-02 Series (also written NGXE, for example N-GXE-SFP-02) puts a fiber port directly in a PC or server, so the computer connects to a fiber network without a separate media converter. Lantronix positions it as a fully IEEE 802.3z and 1000Base-SX compliant adapter for high-end servers, and it suits any desktop or server where fiber is run to the endpoint.

Fixed-optic cards use 1000Base-SX at 850 nm with SC, LC or ST connectors, reaching 220 m on 62.5/125 μm and 550 m on 50/125 μm fiber with an 8.0 dB link budget. The N-GXE-SFP-02 has an open 100/1000Base-X SFP slot with auto-negotiation. All cards use a PCIe v2.1 x1 interface and provide up to 2000 Mbps full-duplex bandwidth, with VLAN, LACP, smart load balancing and failover, TSO, checksum offload and 9014-byte jumbo frames.

PXE and UEFI boot, Wake-on-LAN with Magic Packet and ACPI power management are supported, and an LED on the bracket shows link, activity and speed. Drivers cover Windows 7 through 11, Windows Server 2008 to 2016, Linux and FreeBSD. A standard bracket is fitted, a low-profile bracket is included, and the card operates from 0°C to 50°C.

Key capabilities

Fiber direct to the PC
A 1000Base-SX or SFP fiber port on the card removes the need for an external media converter at each workstation or server.
SC, LC, ST or SFP
Fixed multimode cards come with SC, LC or ST connectors; the SFP version accepts 100 or 1000 Mbps modules for other fiber types.
Teaming and failover
LACP link aggregation, smart load balancing and failover let multiple cards share traffic or protect a server link.
PXE and UEFI boot
PXE and UEFI network boot over fiber support centrally imaged deployments, alongside full Wake-on-LAN with Magic Packet wake-up.
Low-profile ready
Each card ships with a standard bracket installed and a low-profile bracket included for small form factor chassis.

How to choose the right N-GXE-xx-02 Series part number

All four cards are PCIe x1 Gigabit fiber NICs; the middle code sets the fiber port. N-GXE-SC-02, N-GXE-LC-02 and N-GXE-ST-02 have fixed 1000Base-SX 850 nm multimode optics with SC, LC or ST connectors, reaching 550 m on 50/125 μm fiber. N-GXE-SFP-02 has an open 100/1000Base-X SFP slot, with the SFP sold separately, for single-mode, longer reach or 100 Mbps links. The SFP version draws about 1.66 W versus 0.87 W for fixed-optic cards.

N-GXE-xx-02 Series FAQ

What is the difference between N-GXE-LC-02 and N-GXE-SFP-02?

The N-GXE-LC-02 has fixed 1000Base-SX multimode optics with an LC connector, reaching 550 m on 50/125 μm fiber. The N-GXE-SFP-02 has an empty SFP slot that accepts 100 or 1000 Mbps modules, so you can choose single-mode or other optics. The SFP is sold separately.

Which operating systems support the N-GXE-xx-02?

Lantronix lists Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11, Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 and 2016, Linux and FreeBSD, with drivers available for download for each.

Does the N-GXE-xx-02 fit low-profile PCs?

Yes. A standard-height bracket is attached and a low-profile bracket is included in the box. The card uses a PCIe v2.1 x1 slot, so it fits any x1 or larger PCIe slot in a desktop or server.

Does the N-GXE-xx-02 support PXE boot and Wake-on-LAN?

Yes. It supports PXE and UEFI boot for network installs and imaging, full Wake-on-LAN with Magic Packet wake-up, APM and ACPI v2.0c power management. The card can also be identified when several NICs are installed.
