Overview

About the Lantronix NM2-GXE-01 Series

The NM2-GXE-2230-xx-01 Series is the Lantronix fiber NIC kit for the earlier generation of Dell micro desktops, the OptiPlex 7040 and 7050 Micro, and for the matching Wyse 7040 and 7050 thin clients. Thin clients and micro PCs have no expansion slots, so this kit uses what they do have: an M.2 2230 NIC goes in the A or E keyed M.2 slot, a fiber adapter installs in the Option port, and a 76 mm 20-pin flat flex cable connects the two.

Two fiber options are available. NM2-GXE-2230-LC-01 has a fixed 1000Base-SX 850 nm multimode LC optic reaching 220 m on 62.5/125 um fiber or 550 m on 50/125 um fiber, with an 8.0 dB link budget. NM2-GXE-2230-SFP-01 has an open 1000Base-X SFP slot for a module bought separately, which suits single-mode plants. Both run 1000 Mbps full duplex with jumbo frames to 9014 bytes, TSO, MSI-X, Smart Load Balancing and LACP teaming, and support PXE boot, UEFI and Wake on LAN.

Drivers are available for Windows 10, 8, 8.1 and 7 in 32 and 64-bit versions, and for Linux. Power comes from the M.2 connector at 0.8 W typical for the LC version or 0.4 W for the SFP version without a module. The card operates from 0 to 45 C, and a LINK/ACT LED shows link and traffic.

Key capabilities

OptiPlex and Wyse fit
Designed for Dell OptiPlex 7040 and 7050 Micro PCs and Wyse 7040/7050 thin clients, using the M.2 slot and Option port.
Fixed LC or open SFP
Pick an 850 nm 1000Base-SX multimode LC optic to 550 m, or an open SFP slot to choose the module and fiber type yourself.
Network boot ready
PXE boot, UEFI and Wake on LAN support let thin clients and micro PCs boot and wake across the fiber network.
No external adapters
The fiber port mounts in the chassis Option port and connects internally by a 76 mm flat flex cable, so nothing hangs off the PC.
Low power draw
The LC version draws 0.8 W typical and the SFP version 0.4 W typical without a module, both from the M.2 3.3V supply.

How to choose the right NM2-GXE-01 Series part number

The NM2-GXE-01 Series has two part numbers, which differ only in the fiber port. NM2-GXE-2230-LC-01 has a built-in 1000Base-SX 850 nm multimode optic with an LC connector, good to 550 m on 50/125 um fiber. NM2-GXE-2230-SFP-01 has an empty 1000Base-X SFP slot, so you add an SFP module for multimode, single-mode or longer reach. Both fit the same OptiPlex 7040/7050 Micro and Wyse 7040/7050 systems. For OptiPlex 3060 through 7090 Micro, use the NM2-GXE-201 Series instead.
