Overview
About the Lantronix NM2-GXE-201 Series
Fiber-to-the-desk networks need a fiber port on every endpoint, but micro form factor PCs have no PCIe slots. The NM2-GXE-2230-xx-201 Series solves this for Dell OptiPlex Micro systems. Each kit has three parts: an M.2 2230 NIC that fits the PC's A or E keyed M.2 slot, a fiber optic adapter that mounts in the OptiPlex Option port, and a 20-pin flat flex cable joining them. The fiber port sits in the PC's own chassis opening, with no external dongle.
The NIC runs 1000 Mbps full duplex with flow control, jumbo frames up to 9014 bytes, TSO, MSI and MSI-X, Smart Load Balancing and LACP teaming. It supports Wake on LAN, PXE boot and UEFI, so the PC can be imaged and woken over the fiber link, and it is IPv6 capable. Drivers cover Windows 10, 8, 8.1 and 7 (32 and 64-bit) and Linux. The LC version draws 0.8 W typical from the M.2 3.3V supply; the SFP version draws 0.4 W without a module. Operating range is 0 to 45 C.
The LC optic is 1000Base-SX 850 nm multimode, reaching 220 m on 62.5/125 um fiber and 550 m on 50/125 um fiber with an 8.0 dB link budget. The SFP version accepts a separately purchased 1000Base-X SFP module, so the same kit can serve single-mode or longer runs. A LINK/ACT LED shows link and activity, and the M.2 card itself measures 22 x 30 mm.
Key capabilities
- Built for OptiPlex Micro
- Fits Dell OptiPlex 3060, 5060, 7060, 7070, 7080 and 7090 Micro PCs through the internal M.2 slot and the chassis Option port.
- LC or open SFP
- Choose a fixed 1000Base-SX 850 nm LC optic to 550 m on 50/125 um fiber, or an open 1000Base-X SFP slot for your own module.
- PXE, UEFI and WOL
- PXE boot, UEFI support and Wake on LAN let IT image, boot and wake fiber-connected desktops the same way as copper-connected ones.
- Server-class NIC features
- TCP Segmentation Offload, MSI-X, Smart Load Balancing, LACP teaming and 9014-byte jumbo frames on a 22 x 30 mm M.2 2230 card.
- Under 1 W
- The LC version draws 250 mA at 3.3V (0.8 W typical) and the SFP version 120 mA (0.4 W typical without module) from the M.2 connector.
How to choose the right NM2-GXE-201 Series part number
Two choices define the part number: optic and OptiPlex power class. LC models (NM2-GXE-2230-LC-201, NM2-GXE-2230-LC-201A) have a fixed 1000Base-SX multimode LC port; SFP models (NM2-GXE-2230-SFP-201, NM2-GXE-2230-SFP-201A) have an open SFP slot. Parts without the A suffix fit OptiPlex 3060, 5060, 7060, 7070 and 7080/7090 35W systems and use a 127.33 mm flat flex cable. Parts ending in 201A fit OptiPlex 7080/7090 65W systems with a 124.74 mm cable. Confirm your 7080/7090 power rating before ordering.

NM2-GXE-201 Series FAQ
Which Dell OptiPlex models does the NM2-GXE-201 Series fit?
The 201 parts fit OptiPlex 3060, 5060, 7060 and 7070 Micro PCs and 35W versions of the OptiPlex 7080 and 7090 Micro. The 201A parts fit 65W versions of the OptiPlex 7080 and 7090. For OptiPlex 7040 and 7050 Micro, Lantronix offers the separate NM2-GXE-01 Series.
What is the difference between NM2-GXE-2230-LC-201 and NM2-GXE-2230-LC-201A?
Both have the same 1000Base-SX LC fiber port and M.2 NIC. The 201 version is for OptiPlex 35W systems and includes a 127.33 mm flat flex cable; the 201A version is for OptiPlex 7080/7090 65W systems and uses a 124.74 mm cable.
How far can the NM2-GXE-201 LC version transmit?
The LC optic is 1000Base-SX at 850 nm over multimode fiber, reaching 220 m on 62.5/125 um fiber and 550 m on 50/125 um fiber with an 8.0 dB link budget. For longer runs, use the SFP version with a suitable SFP module.
Does the NM2-GXE-201 support PXE boot and Wake on LAN?
Yes. The card supports PXE boot, UEFI and Wake on LAN, along with LACP teaming, Smart Load Balancing, TCP Segmentation Offload and jumbo frames up to 9014 bytes.
Is an SFP module included with NM2-GXE-2230-SFP-201?
No. The SFP versions ship with an open 1000Base-X SFP slot, and the SFP module is sold separately. The card draws 0.4 W typical without a module installed.
