About the Lantronix S2220 Series
The S2220 (often listed as ION S2220) is more than a media converter. It is a managed network interface device (NID) that sits at the demarcation point between a service provider or campus fiber link and the customer's copper equipment, so the operator can monitor and control the link remotely. It suits business Ethernet services and mobile backhaul, where proving link health without a truck roll matters.
Each unit connects a 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 port to a 100 Mbps fiber port. It is MEF 9, 14 and 21 certified and supports IEEE 802.3ah Link OAM with remote loopback, 802.1Q VLAN and double tagging with 4096 VIDs, 802.1p, DiffServ and IPv6 QoS classification, bandwidth profiling, RMON counters, copper cable diagnostics and DMI optical monitoring. Frames up to 10,240 bytes are supported. Security options include SSH, RADIUS and SNMPv3.
Two remote management modes are selectable: IP-based management of the S2220 itself through web, CLI, Telnet, SSH, SNMP or Focal Point, or in-band management over the fiber when it is linked to a C2220 card in a managed ION chassis. A USB port handles basic setup, and firmware is field upgradeable over TFTP.

- SSH, SSL web management, SNMP v1, v2c and v3, RADIUS client and a management VLAN protect access to the NID.
How to choose the right S2220 Series part number
The two S2220 models share the managed NID feature set and 10/100/1000Base-T copper port; they differ on the fiber side. S2220-1014 has a fixed 1310 nm single-mode SC fiber port reaching 10 km with a 16.0 dB link budget. S2220-1040 has an empty 100Base-X SFP slot, so the installed SFP sets fiber type, wavelength and distance. Choose the 1014 for standard single-mode SC runs up to 10 km, and the 1040 when you need a different connector or reach.

What is the difference between a media converter and the S2220 NID?
A basic media converter only translates copper to fiber. The S2220 is a managed network interface device: it adds IEEE 802.3ah Link OAM, remote loopback, VLAN tagging, QoS, bandwidth profiling and remote IP or in-band management so operators can monitor and control the link.
How far can the S2220-1014 transmit?
The S2220-1014 uses 1310 nm single-mode fiber with an SC connector and reaches up to 10 km with a 16.0 dB link budget. The S2220-1040 distance depends on the SFP module installed in its open 100Base-X slot.
Can the S2220 be managed from an ION chassis?
Yes. In in-band mode, the S2220 is managed over the fiber by its local peer when linked to a C2220 card installed in a managed ION chassis. Alternatively, it can be managed individually through its own IP address.
How is the S2220 powered and what is its operating range?
The S2220 uses an external supply with 100-240 VAC, 1 A input and 12 VDC, 1.25 A output. It operates from 0 to 50 C at 5% to 90% non-condensing humidity, and mounts with WMBL, WMBD or the RMS19-SA4-02 shelf.
