About the Lantronix S3100-4040
The ION S3100 (also written S3100 4040) solves fiber mismatches rather than copper-to-fiber conversion. Put a multimode SFP in one slot and a single-mode SFP in the other, and a multimode device can reach a single-mode backbone. Use two long-reach SFPs and it works as a repeater to extend a link. Fit a CWDM SFP on one side and it acts as a transponder, moving a standard optical signal onto a specific CWDM wavelength.
The converter is protocol independent and works at any rate from 100 Mbps to 2.5 Gbps, with both slots running at the same rate. Supported protocols include Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, SONET OC-3/12/48, 1G and 2G Fibre Channel, 2.5G InfiniBand, FDDI and ESCON/SBCON. Link Pass Through and Automatic Link Restoration handle fault propagation, and jumbo frames up to 16,384 bytes pass through.
The unit draws 1.05 W plus the SFP modules, from an external 12 VDC adapter with 120-240 VAC input, and operates from 0°C to 50°C. Lantronix lists it as NDAA and TAA compliant. Web and CLI user guides are shared with the C3100-4040 chassis version.

How to choose the right S3100-4040 part number
S3100-4040 is the only converter part number: one stand-alone unit with two empty SFP slots. Order two SFP modules at the same data rate, chosen for each fiber segment, for example a multimode SFP and a single-mode SFP. What data rates does the S3100-4040 support?
Any rate from 100 Mbps to 2.5 Gbps. It is an any-rate to same-rate converter, so both SFP modules must run at the same data rate, for example two Gigabit Ethernet SFPs or two OC-48 SFPs.
Can the S3100-4040 convert multimode to single-mode fiber?
Yes. Lantronix positions it for single-mode to multimode fiber conversion. Install a multimode SFP in one slot and a single-mode SFP in the other, matching the data rate on both sides.
Does the S3100-4040 include SFP modules?
No. Both SFP slots are open, so you select MSA-compliant modules for each fiber segment. Power consumption is 1.05 W plus whatever the installed SFP modules draw.
