Overview

About the Lantronix TN-SFP-LXB Series

A standard Gigabit fiber link uses two strands, one for each direction. The TN-SFP-LXB modules (also searched as TN-SFP-LXB BiDi or 1000Base-BX SFP) send and receive on different wavelengths over a single strand, so the same fiber plant carries twice as many links, and a single available strand between buildings or along a route can still carry Gigabit Ethernet. Because each end transmits on a different wavelength, modules are deployed in pairs: one end uses the odd-numbered part and the far end the matching even-numbered part.

The 10, 20 and 40 km models pair 1310 nm and 1550 nm, and the 80 km models pair 1510 nm and 1590 nm. Link budgets scale with reach, from 11.0 dB at 10 km to 24.0 dB at 80 km. All modules use a simplex LC connector, are hot-pluggable, comply with the SFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) and IEEE 802.3, and include DMI digital diagnostics for monitoring optical power and temperature from the host switch.

Each module draws 0.66 W at 3.3 V. Standard parts operate from 0 °C to 70 °C, and the T-suffix parts extend that to -40 °C to 85 °C for hardened switches and outdoor cabinets. Lantronix lists Gigabit Ethernet switches and routers, Fiber Channel switch infrastructure, xDSL and metro edge switching as typical applications.

Key capabilities

One fiber, full duplex
Transmit and receive share a single single-mode strand on separate wavelengths, doubling the Gigabit links a fiber plant can carry.
10 to 80 km reach
Matched pairs cover 10 km (11.0 dB), 20 km (14.0 dB), 40 km (20.0 dB) and 80 km (24.0 dB) single-mode links.
DMI diagnostics
Digital diagnostic monitoring lets the host switch report optical levels and module status, simplifying fault isolation on long links.
Industrial temperature versions
TN-SFP-LXB11T and TN-SFP-LXB12T operate from -40 °C to 85 °C for hardened switches and roadside or outdoor enclosures.
MSA-compliant and hot-pluggable
Standard SFP footprint per the Multi-Source Agreement, hot-swappable in Gigabit SFP ports, drawing just 0.66 W at 3.3 V.

How to choose the right TN-SFP-LXB Series part number

Order modules in pairs with the same first digit, which sets the distance: LXB1x for 10 km, LXB2x for 20 km, LXB4x for 40 km and LXB8x for 80 km. The last digit sets the direction. TN-SFP-LXB11, LXB21 and LXB41 transmit at 1310 nm and receive at 1550 nm; LXB12, LXB22 and LXB42 do the reverse. At 80 km, TN-SFP-LXB81 transmits 1510 nm and TN-SFP-LXB82 transmits 1590 nm. A T suffix, as in TN-SFP-LXB11T and TN-SFP-LXB12T, marks the -40 °C to 85 °C industrial version. LXB11 and LXB12 are UL Listed.

TN-SFP-LXB Series FAQ

Do TN-SFP-LXB modules need to be used in pairs?

Yes. Each end must transmit on the wavelength the other end receives. Pair TN-SFP-LXB11 with LXB12, LXB21 with LXB22, LXB41 with LXB42, LXB81 with LXB82, and LXB11T with LXB12T. Two identical modules will not link.

How far can the TN-SFP-LXB Series transmit?

Reach depends on the pair: 10 km with an 11.0 dB link budget, 20 km with 14.0 dB, 40 km with 20.0 dB and 80 km with 24.0 dB. All run over single-mode fiber with an LC connector.

What wavelengths do the TN-SFP-LXB modules use?

The 10, 20 and 40 km models use 1310 nm and 1550 nm, with one module transmitting on each. The 80 km models, TN-SFP-LXB81 and TN-SFP-LXB82, use 1510 nm and 1590 nm instead.

What is the operating temperature of TN-SFP-LXB transceivers?

Standard modules operate from 0 °C to 70 °C. The T-suffix versions, TN-SFP-LXB11T and TN-SFP-LXB12T, operate from -40 °C to 85 °C for industrial and outdoor equipment.

Do TN-SFP-LXB SFPs support digital diagnostics?

Yes. Every module in the series includes DMI (digital monitoring interface) diagnostics and complies with the SFP Multi-Source Agreement, so compatible host switches can read diagnostic data from the module.
