Overview

About the Lantronix TN-GLC-SX-MM Series

The TN-GLC-SX-MM family (also searched as GLC-SX-MM compatible SFPs) is Lantronix's line of Cisco compatible Gigabit SFPs for multimode fiber. It covers short-reach Gigabit fiber links in enterprise and industrial networks, such as switch-to-switch and switch-to-server uplinks over existing multimode cabling, and adds variants for diagnostics, longer multimode runs and extreme temperatures so one family covers the whole site.

The standard modules run 1000Base-SX at 850 nm, reaching 220 m on 62.5/125 µm and 550 m on 50/125 µm fiber with an 8.5 dB link budget. The 2K versions transmit at 1310 nm over multimode to 2 km with a 10.0 dB budget, for campus runs beyond 850 nm reach. MMD and RGD versions add DMI diagnostics, and the RGD versions operate from -40 °C to 85 °C rather than 0 °C to 70 °C. All use a duplex LC connector, draw 0.66 W at 3.3 V and are listed as TAA compliant.

Key capabilities

Cisco compatible SX optics
Lantronix markets the series as Cisco compatible Gigabit SFP modules for 1000Base-SX links on standard multimode fiber.
2 km on multimode
TN-GLC-SX-MM-2K versions use 1310 nm to reach 2 km over multimode fiber, well beyond the 550 m of 850 nm SX optics.
Hardened RGD versions
RGD modules operate from -40 °C to 85 °C and include DMI, for hardened switches in outdoor or industrial enclosures.
Optional DMI diagnostics
TN-GLC-SX-MMD and the RGD versions add digital diagnostics so the host switch can monitor optical power and module status.
20-pack option
TN-GLC-SX-MM-PK packages 20 standard 850 nm modules in one part number, for larger switch deployments that need many identical multimode optics.

How to choose the right TN-GLC-SX-MM Series part number

Start with distance and temperature. For standard 850 nm links up to 550 m, choose TN-GLC-SX-MM (no DMI, UL Listed), TN-GLC-SX-MMD (adds DMI) or TN-GLC-SX-MM-PK (pack of 20). For hardened sites, TN-GLC-SX-MM-RGD is the 850 nm version with DMI rated -40 °C to 85 °C. For multimode runs up to 2 km, choose TN-GLC-SX-MM-2K (1310 nm) or TN-GLC-SX-MM-2K-RGD, which adds DMI and the extended temperature range. Both ends of a link need matching wavelengths.

TN-GLC-SX-MM Series FAQ

Is TN-GLC-SX-MM compatible with Cisco GLC-SX-MM ports?

Lantronix markets the TN-GLC-SX-MM Series as Cisco compatible Gigabit SFP modules. They are 1000Base-SX multimode SFPs with LC connectors following IEEE 802.3, intended for Gigabit SFP ports in switches and routers.

How far does TN-GLC-SX-MM transmit on multimode fiber?

The 850 nm modules reach 220 m on 62.5/125 µm and 550 m on 50/125 µm multimode fiber with an 8.5 dB link budget. The TN-GLC-SX-MM-2K and 2K-RGD versions use 1310 nm to reach 2 km with a 10.0 dB budget.

What does the RGD suffix mean on TN-GLC-SX-MM modules?

RGD identifies the hardened versions, TN-GLC-SX-MM-RGD and TN-GLC-SX-MM-2K-RGD, which operate from -40 °C to 85 °C and include DMI. Standard versions operate from 0 °C to 70 °C.

Which TN-GLC-SX-MM modules include DMI diagnostics?

TN-GLC-SX-MMD, TN-GLC-SX-MM-RGD and TN-GLC-SX-MM-2K-RGD include DMI digital diagnostics. The base TN-GLC-SX-MM, its 20-pack and TN-GLC-SX-MM-2K do not list diagnostics, so choose a DMI version if your switch monitors optical levels.

Can a TN-GLC-SX-MM-2K link to a standard 850 nm SX module?

No. The 2K modules transmit at 1310 nm while standard SX modules use 850 nm, so a link needs the same type at both ends. Pair 2K with 2K (or 2K-RGD) modules for 2 km multimode runs.
