Overview

About the Lantronix SLC 8000 SFPs

SLC 8000 (also written SLC8000) console servers with fiber SFP network ports, the SKUs that start with SLC and end in 11S or 11G, need an SFP module in each port before they can reach the management network. This family lists the transceivers Lantronix offers for that purpose, so an out-of-band console manager can sit on the same fiber infrastructure as the routers, switches and servers it manages, in a data center row or across a campus.

The range spans short to long reach. SFP-550M-DUPL is 1000BASE-SX at 850 nm over multimode fiber to 550 m. Single-mode duplex options run at 1310 nm to 2 km (SFP-2K-DUPL) and 10 km (SFP-10K-DUPL, 1000BASE-LX/LH), and at 1550 nm to 40 km (SFP-40K-DUPL, 1000BASE-EX). Two 1000BASE-BX BiDi modules carry Gigabit over a single strand to 10 km using 1310 nm and 1490 nm. SFP-100M-COPPER provides a 1000BASE-T RJ-45 connection to 100 m.

Lantronix states these transceivers have been tested with Cisco, Juniper and HP equipment, including Cisco 29x, 35x and 37x, Nexus N5K, Juniper EX-42 and HP ProCurve 25x series. Choosing the module comes down to the fiber already in place at the far end: multimode or single-mode, one strand or two, and the distance to the switch the console server uplinks to.

Key capabilities

Matched to SLC 8000
Offered by Lantronix specifically for SLC 8000 console manager models with fiber SFP ports, identified by SKUs ending in 11S or 11G.
550 m to 40 km
Multimode 550 m, single-mode 2 km, 10 km and 40 km duplex, and 10 km BiDi options cover in-row to inter-building management links.
Single-fiber BiDi pair
SFP-10K-T13-R14 and SFP-10K-T14-R13 run 1000BASE-BX over one single-mode strand, transmitting at 1310 nm and 1490 nm respectively.
Copper RJ-45 option
SFP-100M-COPPER turns an SFP port into a 1000BASE-T RJ-45 port for runs up to 100 m on standard copper cabling.
Tested with major switches
Lantronix reports testing with Cisco 29x, 35x, 37x and Nexus N5K, Juniper EX-42 and HP ProCurve 25x series equipment.

How to choose the right SLC 8000 SFPs part number

Match the module to the fiber at the far end. For multimode, choose SFP-550M-DUPL (850 nm, 550 m). For duplex single-mode, pick by distance: SFP-2K-DUPL (1310 nm, 2 km), SFP-10K-DUPL (1310 nm, 10 km) or SFP-40K-DUPL (1550 nm, 40 km). For a single strand, order SFP-10K-T13-R14 for one end and SFP-10K-T14-R13 for the other; they transmit 1310 nm and 1490 nm respectively. For copper cabling, use SFP-100M-COPPER (1000BASE-T, 100 m).

SLC 8000 SFPs FAQ

Which SLC 8000 models use these SFP transceivers?

Lantronix offers these SFPs for SLC 8000 console managers with fiber SFP ports. Those are the SKUs that start with SLC and end with either 11S or 11G.

Do the SFP-10K BiDi modules need to be used in pairs?

Yes. SFP-10K-T13-R14 transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1490 nm, and SFP-10K-T14-R13 does the opposite. Install one at each end of the single-mode strand to form a 10 km 1000BASE-BX link.

Can I use a copper connection on an SLC 8000 with SFP ports?

Yes. SFP-100M-COPPER is a 1000BASE-T SFP with an RJ-45 connector that supports copper runs up to 100 m, letting a fiber-port SLC 8000 connect to a copper network.

Have Lantronix SFPs been tested with Cisco and Juniper switches?

Lantronix states its SFP transceivers have been tested with Cisco, Juniper and HP products, including Cisco 29x, 35x, 37x and Nexus N5K series, Juniper EX-42 series and HP ProCurve 25x series.

Which SLC 8000 SFP supports the longest distance?

SFP-40K-DUPL is a 1000BASE-EX duplex module at 1550 nm over single-mode fiber, rated for 40 km. For multimode fiber the maximum is 550 m with SFP-550M-DUPL.
