Overview

About the Lantronix TN-SFP-OC3M & TN-SFP-GE-100FX

These two SFPs solve different 100 Mbps fiber problems with the same optics. Both are hot-pluggable, MSA-compliant modules running 1310 nm over multimode fiber on duplex LC connectors to 2 km, with DMI digital diagnostics. The difference is the host port they are designed for. Lantronix lists applications in Fast Ethernet and OC-3 switches and routers, xDSL equipment and metro edge switching.

The TN-SFP-OC3M supports both 100Base-FX and OC-3 framing, with an 11.0 dB link budget, and is UL Listed, so it suits SONET OC-3 interfaces as well as Fast Ethernet SFP ports. The TN-SFP-GE-100FX (also searched as TN-SFP-GE100FX) is built for a different case: when plugged into a Gigabit SFP slot that supports SGMII, it provides a 100Base-FX interface, letting a Gigabit switch connect to existing 100 Mbps fiber equipment. Its link budget is 10.0 dB.

Both modules draw 0.66 W from a 3.3 V supply, measure 13 x 55 x 8 mm, operate from 0°C to 70°C and meet IEC-60825 and CFR 1040.10/1040.11 laser safety requirements. Because the optics are 1310 nm multimode, the far end of the link must also use 1310 nm multimode optics, such as another TN-SFP-OC3M or a 100Base-FX device.

Key capabilities

100FX from Gigabit slots
TN-SFP-GE-100FX gives a Gigabit SGMII SFP slot a 100Base-FX fiber interface to reach legacy Fast Ethernet devices.
OC-3 framing support
TN-SFP-OC3M handles OC-3 framing as well as 100Base-FX, for SONET OC-3 and Fast Ethernet ports on switches and routers.
Digital diagnostics
Both modules include DMI, so the host can read optical and operating values for monitoring and troubleshooting.
1310 nm multimode, 2 km
Both run 1310 nm on duplex LC multimode fiber to 2 km, with 11.0 dB or 10.0 dB link budgets.

How to choose the right TN-SFP-OC3M & TN-SFP-GE-100FX part number

Pick by the host port. Use TN-SFP-OC3M in a Fast Ethernet or OC-3 SFP port; it supports OC-3 framing, has an 11.0 dB budget and is UL Listed. Use TN-SFP-GE-100FX in a Gigabit SFP slot that supports SGMII when the far end is a 100Base-FX device; it presents a 100Base-FX interface with a 10.0 dB budget. Both are 1310 nm multimode LC to 2 km with DMI and 0°C to 70°C operation.

TN-SFP-OC3M & TN-SFP-GE-100FX FAQ

What is the difference between TN-SFP-OC3M and TN-SFP-GE-100FX?

Both are 1310 nm multimode LC SFPs to 2 km with DMI. The TN-SFP-OC3M supports 100Base-FX and OC-3 framing for Fast Ethernet or OC-3 ports and is UL Listed. The TN-SFP-GE-100FX provides 100Base-FX when plugged into a Gigabit SGMII SFP slot.

Can I use a 100Base-FX SFP in a Gigabit SFP port?

With the right module. The TN-SFP-GE-100FX is made for this case: plugged into a Gigabit SFP slot that supports SGMII, it provides a 100Base-FX interface, so the switch can link to 100 Mbps fiber devices up to 2 km away.

Do these SFP modules support DMI?

Yes. Both the TN-SFP-OC3M and TN-SFP-GE-100FX include digital diagnostic monitoring (DMI), so compatible host switches and routers can read the module's optical and operating values for troubleshooting.

What is the operating temperature of the TN-SFP-OC3M?

0°C to 70°C. Lantronix's specifications also list a -40°C to 85°C rating for a TN-SFP-OC3MT variant, which is not one of the two part numbers on this page.
