Overview
About the Lantronix TN-SFP-OC3MB Series
When multimode fiber strands are scarce, the TN-SFP-OC3MB Series (also written TN SFP OC3MB) doubles their usefulness by sending and receiving on one strand instead of two. Each module transmits on one wavelength and receives on the other, so a link needs one TN-SFP-OC3MB1 at one end and one TN-SFP-OC3MB2 at the other. Lantronix lists Fast Ethernet and OC-3 switches and routers, xDSL equipment and metro edge switching as applications.
Both modules are 100Base-FX, use a simplex SC connector on multimode fiber, reach up to 2 km and share a 15.0 dB link budget. The TN-SFP-OC3MB1 transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm; the TN-SFP-OC3MB2 transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm. Digital diagnostics (DMI) report module status to compatible hosts. Each module draws 0.66 W at 3.3 V and operates from 0 to 70 C.
The modules are hot-pluggable, comply with the SFP Multi-Source Agreement and IEEE 802.3, and meet IEC 60825 and FDA 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 laser safety requirements. Each measures 13 x 55 x 8 mm. Both part numbers are described by Lantronix as 100Base-FX modules.
Key capabilities
- One strand per link
- Bidirectional 1310/1550 nm operation carries both directions of a 100Base-FX link on a single multimode fiber strand instead of two.
- Matched MB1 and MB2 pair
- TN-SFP-OC3MB1 transmits at 1310 nm and TN-SFP-OC3MB2 at 1550 nm, so one of each completes a working link.
- 2 km multimode reach
- Both modules reach up to 2 km on multimode fiber with a 15.0 dB link budget and a simplex SC connector.
- Digital diagnostics
- DMI support lets compatible switches and routers read module diagnostics, simplifying checks on single-strand links.
- Low 0.66 W draw
- Each hot-pluggable module consumes 0.66 W from the host's 3.3 V SFP supply in the standard 13 x 55 x 8 mm footprint.
How to choose the right TN-SFP-OC3MB Series part number
The series contains two complementary modules that must be used together. TN-SFP-OC3MB1 transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm. TN-SFP-OC3MB2 transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm. Install an MB1 at one end of the fiber and an MB2 at the other; two MB1s or two MB2s will not link. Otherwise they are identical: 100Base-FX, simplex SC multimode, 2 km reach, 15.0 dB link budget, DMI and a 0 to 70 C operating range.

TN-SFP-OC3MB Series FAQ
Do I need both TN-SFP-OC3MB1 and TN-SFP-OC3MB2?
Yes. They are a complementary pair. The MB1 transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, while the MB2 transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm. Put one at each end of the single fiber strand.
How far does the TN-SFP-OC3MB reach?
Both modules reach up to 2 km over multimode fiber with a 15.0 dB link budget. They use a simplex SC connector, so only one fiber strand is needed between the two ends.
What is the operating temperature of TN-SFP-OC3MB modules?
TN-SFP-OC3MB1 and TN-SFP-OC3MB2 operate from 0 C to 70 C. Each draws 0.66 W at 3.3 V and complies with the SFP Multi-Source Agreement for hot-pluggable use.
Does the TN-SFP-OC3MB support digital diagnostics?
Yes. Both modules include DMI (digital diagnostic monitoring), which compatible host switches and routers can read to check module status and the optical link, useful when both directions share one strand.
