Overview
About the Lantronix TN-SFP-OC3SB Series
The TN-SFP-OC3SB Series, made up of the TN-SFP-OC3SB21 and TN-SFP-OC3SB22, is a bidirectional (BiDi) SFP pair for Fast Ethernet and OC-3 links over a single strand of single-mode fiber. One module transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, and its partner does the opposite, so both directions share one fiber. That halves fiber consumption compared with duplex optics, which matters when strands are scarce or leased. Lantronix lists applications including Fast Ethernet and OC-3 switches and routers, xDSL equipment and metro edge switching.
Both modules reach 20 km (12.4 mi) with a 19.0 dB link budget on a simplex LC connector. They are hot-pluggable, follow the SFP Multi-Source Agreement, comply with IEEE 802.3 and draw 0.66 W from 3.3 V. Laser safety certification covers IEC-60825 and FDA 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11. Operating range is 0°C to 70°C.
Because the wavelengths are complementary, a link always needs one of each part number: the OC3SB21 at one end and the OC3SB22 at the other. Two identical modules facing each other will not form a link, so label each end of the fiber during installation and keep matched spares for both.
Key capabilities
- One fiber, full duplex
- 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelengths share one single-mode strand, freeing the second fiber for another service.
- 20 km reach
- Both ends are rated 20 km (12.4 mi) over single-mode fiber with a 19.0 dB link budget.
- Fast Ethernet and OC-3
- Supports 100Base-FX and OC-3 rates for Fast Ethernet and OC-3 switches, routers, xDSL equipment and metro edge applications.
- MSA hot-pluggable
- Standard SFP footprint compliant with the Multi-Source Agreement, so modules can be hot-swapped without powering down the host.
- Low 0.66 W draw
- Runs from 3.3 V at 0.66 W in the standard 13 x 55 x 8 mm SFP envelope.
How to choose the right TN-SFP-OC3SB Series part number
The two part numbers are the two ends of one link and must be installed as a pair. TN-SFP-OC3SB21 transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, and its part description lists DMI diagnostics. TN-SFP-OC3SB22 transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm; its description does not list DMI. Both are 100Base-FX/OC-3, single-mode simplex LC, 20 km and 19.0 dB. Order one of each per fiber link. If you want diagnostics at the far end too, confirm DMI support on the OC3SB22 against the datasheet.

TN-SFP-OC3SB Series FAQ
Do TN-SFP-OC3SB modules have to be used in pairs?
Yes. TN-SFP-OC3SB21 (1310 nm TX/1550 nm RX) must be paired with TN-SFP-OC3SB22 (1550 nm TX/1310 nm RX) at the opposite end of the same single-mode fiber.
How far can the TN-SFP-OC3SB transmit?
Up to 20 km (12.4 mi) over single-mode fiber, with a 19.0 dB link budget. Both modules in a pair share this rating and use simplex LC connectors.
Does the TN-SFP-OC3SB support digital diagnostics?
The series supports a digital diagnostic function, and the TN-SFP-OC3SB21 part description specifies DMI. The TN-SFP-OC3SB22 description does not list DMI. Confirm DMI on the OC3SB22 against the datasheet if needed.
What data rates does the TN-SFP-OC3SB support?
100Base-FX Fast Ethernet and OC-3. Lantronix lists Fast Ethernet/OC-3 switches and routers, xDSL applications and metro edge switching as applications. Both operate over single-mode fiber.
What is the operating temperature of the TN-SFP-OC3SB?
0°C to 70°C. The module draws 0.66 W from 3.3 V and carries IEC-60825 and FDA 21 CFR 1040.10/1040.11 laser safety certification. It is hot-pluggable.
