Overview

About the Lantronix S6310-3340

The S6310-3340 (also written S6310 3340) extends legacy analog phone lines over fiber where copper runs are too long, too noisy or unavailable. Units work in pairs. The unit at the line side connects to a telephone line or PBX in FXO mode, acting as a telephone and detecting ringing voltage. The far unit runs in FXS mode, acting as the central office and connecting to a telephone, modem or other POTS device. Pairs can be two stand-alone units, two C6310-3340 ION chassis cards, or one of each.

The analog port is an RJ-11 jack at 600 ohms impedance. Lantronix specifies a 48 VDC battery source, a 90 Vp-p ringing supply at 16-65 Hz, a REN of 1.0 and a 25 Hz ring cadence. It passes voice-grade audio, distant-end ringing and Caller ID, and works with traditional telephone modems. Setting both ends to FXS enables Automatic Ring Down for hotline-style connections. DIP switches select FXO or FXS, normal or reversed polarity, U-law or A-law coding and the country format.

The fiber side is an empty SFP slot that takes Gigabit Ethernet SFP modules, so the link can use multimode or single-mode, duplex or single-strand fiber. The unit draws 2.0 W without the SFP from the 12 VDC supply provided, and complies with FCC Part 68, ETSI ES 203-021 and ISED CS-03.

Key capabilities

FXO or FXS mode
A DIP switch sets each unit to FXO (telephone side) or FXS (central office side), so one part number covers both ends.
Ringing and Caller ID
Passes voice-grade audio, distant-end ringing and Caller ID, and works with traditional analog telephone modems.
Automatic Ring Down
With both converters set to FXS, the pair supports Automatic Ring Down, useful for hotline-style phone circuits between two fixed points.
Any Gigabit SFP optic
The empty SFP slot accepts Gigabit SFP modules for multimode, single-mode, duplex or single-strand fiber installations.
Worldwide country formats
DIP switches select U-law or A-law coding and the country code, with FCC Part 68, ETSI TBR21 and ISED CS-03 compliance.
Chassis management option
Paired with a POTS card in a managed ION chassis, the remote stand-alone unit can be managed in-band over the fiber.

How to choose the right S6310-3340 part number

The S6310-3340 is a single stand-alone part with an RJ-11 analog port and an empty SFP slot, so order two units (or one unit plus a C6310-3340 ION chassis card) and a matching pair of Gigabit SFP modules for your fiber. Configure one end as FXO and the other as FXS, or both as FXS for Automatic Ring Down. The SPS-UA12DHT 12 VDC adapter and the RMS19-SA4-02 4-slot shelf are listed as compatible accessories.

S6310-3340 FAQ

Do S6310-3340 converters need to be used in pairs?

Yes. One unit connects to the telephone line or PBX in FXO mode and the other connects to the phone or device in FXS mode. Pairs can be two stand-alone S6310-3340 units, two C6310-3340 ION chassis cards, or one of each.

What is the difference between FXO and FXS mode on the S6310-3340?

In FXO mode the unit acts as a telephone, connecting to a phone line or PBX and detecting ringing voltage. In FXS mode it acts as a central office, supplying ring and connecting to a telephone device. DIP switch SW1 selects the mode.

Which SFP modules does the S6310-3340 use?

It uses Gigabit Ethernet SFP modules in an empty SFP slot. Lantronix offers SFPs for multimode or single-mode fiber and for dual-strand or single-strand installations, so choose a matched pair for your fiber type and distance.

Does the S6310-3340 support Caller ID and modems?

Yes. It supports Caller ID and ringing at the distant end and is compatible with traditional telephone modems. It only supports analog POTS lines, not digital phone systems.
