Lantronix SBFTF Series Fast Ethernet Media and Rate Converters
The SBFTF Series is a stand-alone bridging media converter that links 10/100Base-TX copper to 100Base-FX fiber, converting both media and data rate so 10 Mbps or half-duplex equipment can run over a Fast Ethernet fiber link.
Overview
About the Lantronix SBFTF Series
Most simple media converters pass frames straight through, so both ends must run at the same speed and duplex. The SBFTF Series (part numbers SBFTF10xx-105) is a bridging converter instead: it buffers frames in 512 KB of RAM and filters on a 1K MAC address table, so the twisted-pair port can run at 10 or 100 Mbps while the fiber side runs at 100 Mbps. Half or full duplex is supported on every port, including fiber, which lets legacy 10 Mbps or half-duplex devices join a modern fiber backbone.
Six DIP switches set copper auto-negotiation, duplex and speed, fiber duplex, Link Pass Through and Far-End-Fault detection. Auto-MDI/MDIX removes crossover cabling questions, and automatic link restoration recovers the link after faults. The unit forwards up to 148,800 pps at Fast Ethernet and handles packets up to 2044 bytes untagged or 2048 bytes tagged. Six status LEDs show power, fiber and copper link and activity, duplex on each side and copper speed.
The compact 3.25 x 4.8 x 1 inch housing runs from an external 12 VDC supply and operates from 0 to 50°C. It mounts on DIN rail with the WMBD-F flat bracket, on a wall or vertical surface with the WMB-series brackets, or in the RMS19-SA4-02 4-slot shelf and E-MCR-05 12-slot rack. MTBF is rated above 114,580 hours under Bellcore7 V5.0, and the unit carries FCC Class A, VCCI Class 1 and CE marks.
Key capabilities
- 10/100 Mbps rate conversion
- Store-and-forward bridging lets the copper port run at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps while the 100Base-FX fiber port stays at 100 Mbps.
- Half-duplex fiber support
- Half or full duplex is selectable on all ports, including the fiber port, so older half-duplex equipment can connect over fiber.
- Fault visibility features
- Link Pass Through and Far-End-Fault detection, each switchable by DIP switch, propagate a fiber or copper link failure so attached equipment sees the fault.
- Four fixed optics plus SFP
- Choose ST, SC or LC 1300 nm multimode to 2 km, SC 1310 nm single-mode to 20 km, or an empty 100Base-X SFP slot.
- Small stand-alone housing
- Measuring 3.25 x 4.8 x 1 inches and powered from 12 VDC, the converter fits DIN rail, wall brackets or rack shelves.
How to choose the right SBFTF Series part number
Every SBFTF model has one 10/100Base-TX RJ-45 port; the fiber side defines the part number. SBFTF1011-105 (ST), SBFTF1013-105 (SC) and SBFTF1039-105 (LC) use 1300 nm multimode fiber to 2 km with an 11.0 dB link budget. SBFTF1014-105 uses 1310 nm single-mode fiber on SC connectors to 20 km with a 16.0 dB budget. SBFTF1040-105 has an empty 100Base-X SFP slot, so distance and fiber type follow the SFP you install. Mounting options include the WMBD-F DIN rail bracket and the RMS19-SA4-02 4-slot shelf.

SBFTF Series FAQ
What is the difference between a rate converter and a media converter?
A standard media converter passes traffic at one fixed speed. The SBFTF is a bridging rate converter: it buffers and forwards frames, so the copper port can run at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps while the fiber link runs at 100 Mbps.
How far can an SBFTF converter transmit over fiber?
Multimode models SBFTF1011-105, SBFTF1013-105 and SBFTF1039-105 reach 2 km at 1300 nm. The single-mode SBFTF1014-105 reaches 20 km at 1310 nm. The SFP-slot SBFTF1040-105 distance depends on the installed 100Base-X SFP, and Lantronix lists network extension up to 120 km.
What power supply does the SBFTF Series use?
The converter runs from an external AC/DC supply rated 12 VDC at 0.8 A minimum. The SPS-2460-SA and SPS-2460-PS power supplies are listed as compatible accessories for stand-alone media converters.
Can the SBFTF be DIN-rail or rack mounted?
Yes. The WMBD-F flat bracket fits 3.25-inch-wide stand-alone converters on DIN rail, and the RMS19-SA4-02 4-slot shelf or E-MCR-05 12-slot rack hold multiple converters in a 19-inch rack.
What is the operating temperature of the SBFTF Series?
The SBFTF Series operates from 0°C to 50°C at 5% to 90% non-condensing humidity and up to 10,000 feet of altitude. It is a commercial-temperature product for indoor installations.
