Overview

About the Lantronix SM12XPA

The SM12XPA (ordered as SM12XPA-NA and other regional SKUs) sits one layer above the access switches. Its twelve SFP+ slots take 1G or 10G optics from edge switches, and two SFP28 slots run at 1G, 10G or 25G toward the core, so a campus or building can consolidate many fiber runs into one rack-width box. There are no copper data ports; an RJ-45 console port handles out-of-band setup.

Backplane capacity is 340 Gbps with store-and-forward switching, a 32K MAC table and jumbo frames up to 10K bytes. Layer 3 features include IPv4/IPv6 static routing, RIP v1/v2 and OSPF v2 for dynamic route learning and fast convergence. Resilience comes from STP, RSTP and MSTP, LACP, ITU-T G.8031 linear protection and G.8032 Ethernet ring protection switching, plus an optional secondary hot-swappable AC power supply.

Management options include web GUI, CLI, SSH, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 and a RESTful API for third-party tools. The embedded Device Management System provides topology, floor and map views for fiber-dense installations. Security features include RADIUS and TACACS+ authentication, IP source guard, DHCP snooping and L2/L3/L4 ACLs.

Key capabilities

25G SFP28 uplinks
Two SFP28 slots run at 1G, 10G or 25G, giving the switch a higher-speed path to the core than its 10G access-facing ports.
OSPF and RIP routing
IPv4/IPv6 static routing, RIP v1/v2 and OSPF v2 let the switch route between VLANs and exchange routes dynamically with neighboring routers.
Ring protection switching
ITU-T G.8032 Ethernet ring protection and G.8031 linear protection keep fiber backbones running when a link fails.
Optional redundant power
A secondary hot-swappable 250 W AC power supply, the PS-AC-250 series, adds power redundancy for aggregation-layer uptime.
RESTful API
A REST API allows the switch to be configured and monitored from third-party orchestration and network management tools.

How to choose the right SM12XPA part number

The SM12XPA hardware is the same in every part number. SM12XPA-NA includes a North America power cord; Lantronix also lists -LA, -EU, -UK, -SA, -JP, -OZ and -BR suffixes for other regional cords. For power redundancy, add the optional secondary 250 W, 100-240 VAC supply (PS-AC-250 with the matching regional suffix, for example PS-AC-250-NA). Optics are not included: choose SFP+ modules for the twelve 10G slots and SFP28 or SFP+ modules for the two 25G slots.

SM12XPA FAQ

Does the SM12XPA support 25G SFP28 modules?

Yes. Two of its fourteen slots are SFP28 and run at 1G, 10G or 25G. The other twelve are SFP+ slots that run at 1G or 10G. The switch has no copper data ports, only an RJ-45 console port.

Is the SM12XPA a Layer 3 switch?

Yes. It supports IPv4 and IPv6 static routing, RIP v1/v2 and OSPF v2, alongside full Layer 2 switching with STP/RSTP/MSTP, LACP, up to 4K VLANs, IGMP v1/v2/v3 and MLD snooping.

Can the SM12XPA have redundant power supplies?

Yes. Lantronix offers an optional secondary hot-swappable 250 W power supply with 100-240 VAC input, the PS-AC-250 series, in regional power-cord versions such as PS-AC-250-NA and PS-AC-250-EU.

What is the SM12XPA operating temperature and size?

It operates from 0°C to +50°C at up to 95% non-condensing humidity and below 3,000 m altitude. The chassis measures 17.4 x 11.8 x 1.7 inches and weighs 8.45 lbs, with 100-240 VAC input.

How is the SM12XPA managed?

Through the web GUI, CLI, SSH, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 or a RESTful API. The embedded Device Management System adds topology, floor and map views. It also supports RMON, sFlow, LLDP, syslog, PTP and NTP.
