Overview

About the Lantronix TN-GLC-T Series

Not every SFP port needs fiber. When a switch, router or media converter has an open SFP slot but the device at the other end has an RJ45 port within 100 m, a copper SFP is the simplest link. The TN-GLC-T Series fills that role. Lantronix lists the modules as Cisco compatible Gigabit SFPs, matching ports that call for a GLC-T type module (the Cisco-style name these TN- part numbers mirror). All are UL listed.

There are two electrical versions. TN-GLC-T is a 1000Base-T module that runs at Gigabit only, for links between Gigabit equipment. TN-GLC-T-MG is 10/100/1000Base-T, so it can also connect older Fast Ethernet or 10 Mbps devices to a Gigabit SFP port. Both reach 100 m (328 ft) over RJ45 twisted-pair cabling, draw 1.0 W from the host's 3.3V supply and operate from 0 to 70 C, with storage from -40 to 85 C. The module body measures 24 x 71 x 14 mm.

Key capabilities

RJ45 in an SFP slot
Converts any compatible SFP port into a copper RJ45 Ethernet port with 100 m (328 ft) reach on twisted-pair cable.
Gigabit or tri-speed
TN-GLC-T runs 1000Base-T; TN-GLC-T-MG supports 10/100/1000Base-T for connecting slower legacy devices to Gigabit SFP ports.
Cisco compatible
Lantronix lists the TN-GLC-T Series as Cisco compatible Gigabit SFP modules for switch and router SFP ports.
UL listed, 1.0 W
UL listed modules drawing 1.0 W from a single 3.3V host supply, rated for 0 to 70 C operation.
20-pack option
TN-GLC-T-PK supplies 20 TN-GLC-T modules together for switch rollouts that need many copper ports at once.

How to choose the right TN-GLC-T Series part number

Pick by speed, then quantity. TN-GLC-T is a single 1000Base-T module for Gigabit-only links up to 100 m. TN-GLC-T-PK is a pack of 20 identical TN-GLC-T modules. TN-GLC-T-MG supports 10/100/1000Base-T, so choose it when the far-end device may run at 10 or 100 Mbps. All three use an RJ45 connector, draw 1.0 W and operate from 0 to 70 C. Lantronix also lists related copper SFPs, including TN-SFP-T-MG, TN-SFP-TX and TN-SFP-GE-T.

TN-GLC-T Series FAQ

What is the difference between TN-GLC-T and TN-GLC-T-MG?

TN-GLC-T is 1000Base-T and runs at Gigabit speed only. TN-GLC-T-MG is 10/100/1000Base-T, so it can link to 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps devices as well as Gigabit. Both reach 100 m on RJ45 copper cabling.

How far can the TN-GLC-T copper SFP transmit?

All TN-GLC-T Series modules support 100 m (328 ft) over twisted-pair cable with an RJ45 connector, the standard reach for 1000Base-T and 10/100/1000Base-T copper Ethernet.

Is the TN-GLC-T compatible with Cisco equipment?

Lantronix describes the TN-GLC-T Series as Cisco compatible Gigabit SFP modules. They follow IEEE 802.3, run from the host's 3.3V supply and are UL listed.

How much power does a TN-GLC-T module draw?

Each module consumes 1.0 W from the 3.3V SFP supply. Operating temperature is 0 to 70 C and storage temperature is -40 to 85 C.
