Overview

About the Lantronix TN-SFP-OC3Sx Series

These hot-pluggable SFP modules (also written TN SFP OC3S or OC3 SFP) carry 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet or OC-3 traffic over duplex single-mode fiber. Lantronix lists Fast Ethernet and OC-3 switches and routers, xDSL equipment and metro edge switching as the target applications, where a 100 Mbps port needs to reach a site tens of kilometers away rather than across a building.

All three models use LC connectors and support digital diagnostics (DMI), so a host that reads SFP diagnostics can report optical levels and module health. Two models run at 1310 nm: TN-SFP-OC3S reaches 20 km with a 17.0 dB link budget and TN-SFP-OC3S3 reaches 30 km with 20.0 dB. TN-SFP-OC3S8 moves to 1550 nm for 80 km with a 29.0 dB budget. Each module draws 0.66 W at 3.3 V and operates from -10 to 85 C.

The modules are hot-pluggable, comply with the SFP Multi-Source Agreement for use in MSA-standard SFP ports, and meet IEEE 802.3 plus IEC 60825 and FDA 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 laser safety requirements. Each measures 13 x 55 x 8 mm. UL listing applies to specific SKUs only, so confirm it per part number.

Key capabilities

Three distance classes
Choose 20 km or 30 km at 1310 nm, or 80 km at 1550 nm, to match the module's reach and link budget to the actual fiber span.
Fast Ethernet and OC-3
Each module supports 100Base-FX Ethernet and OC-3 SONET rates, so one part family covers both kinds of 100 Mbps-class optical ports.
Digital diagnostics (DMI)
DMI lets compatible hosts read optical and module diagnostics, which speeds troubleshooting of long single-mode spans.
Extended temperature range
Modules operate from -10 to 85 C, suiting equipment in closets, cabinets and remote sites with limited climate control.
MSA-compliant hot-plug
The modules follow the SFP Multi-Source Agreement footprint and can be inserted or removed with the host powered on.

How to choose the right TN-SFP-OC3Sx Series part number

Pick by distance and wavelength; all three are duplex single-mode LC modules with DMI. TN-SFP-OC3S runs at 1310 nm to 20 km with a 17.0 dB budget and is the model listed as UL Listed and TAA compliant. TN-SFP-OC3S3 also runs at 1310 nm but reaches 30 km with a 20.0 dB budget. TN-SFP-OC3S8 uses 1550 nm for 80 km with a 29.0 dB budget. Both ends of a link need matching wavelength modules, and the link loss must fall within the module's budget.

TN-SFP-OC3Sx Series FAQ

What is the difference between TN-SFP-OC3S, OC3S3 and OC3S8?

All are 100Base-FX/OC-3 duplex single-mode LC SFPs with DMI. TN-SFP-OC3S reaches 20 km at 1310 nm (17.0 dB), TN-SFP-OC3S3 reaches 30 km at 1310 nm (20.0 dB) and TN-SFP-OC3S8 reaches 80 km at 1550 nm (29.0 dB).

Do TN-SFP-OC3Sx modules support OC-3 as well as Fast Ethernet?

Yes. Lantronix specifies these modules as 100Base-FX/OC-3 transceivers for Fast Ethernet and OC-3 switches and routers, xDSL applications and metro edge switching. All three models support the OC-3 rate as well as 100 Mbps Ethernet.

What is the operating temperature of the TN-SFP-OC3Sx Series?

The TN-SFP-OC3S, OC3S3 and OC3S8 operate from -10 C to 85 C. Each module draws 0.66 W from a 3.3 V supply and measures 13 x 55 x 8 mm in the standard SFP footprint.

Is the TN-SFP-OC3S TAA compliant?

The TN-SFP-OC3S is listed as TAA compliant and UL Listed. Lantronix notes that UL listing applies to specific SKUs only, so check the individual part number when a project requires TAA or UL documentation.
