Overview

About the Lantronix TN-SFP-SX Series

The TN-SFP-SX is the short-reach workhorse of a Gigabit fiber network: an 850 nm multimode optic for links inside a building, between racks or across a small campus. It follows the SFP Multi-Sourcing Agreement (MSA), so it fits standard hot-pluggable SFP ports in Gigabit Ethernet switches and routers, Fiber Channel switch infrastructure, xDSL equipment and metro edge switches, which are the applications Lantronix lists for it.

Reach depends on the multimode fiber installed: 220 m on 62.5/125 μm fiber or 550 m on 50/125 μm fiber, with an 8.0 dB link budget in both cases. The LC duplex connector uses one fiber to transmit and one to receive. The module draws 0.66 W from 3.3 V and operates from -10°C to 85°C, a wider range than commercial 0°C-rated optics. Lantronix lists a digital diagnostic function among the series features.

The TN-SFP-SX (sometimes written TNSFPSX) complies with IEEE 802.3 and with IEC-60825 and FDA 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 laser safety, and the single-module part number is UL listed. It measures 13 x 55 x 8 mm, the standard SFP footprint, and installation is covered in the Lantronix TN-SFP-xxx user guide. Order TN-SFP-SX for individual ports or TN-SFP-SX-PK when populating many switch ports at once.

Key capabilities

MSA-compliant SFP
Follows the SFP Multi-Sourcing Agreement footprint and is hot-pluggable, so it installs in standard Gigabit SFP ports without powering down the host.
Up to 550 m reach
The 850 nm optic reaches 220 m on 62.5/125 μm multimode fiber or 550 m on 50/125 μm, both with an 8.0 dB link budget.
Gigabit Ethernet or Fiber Channel
Lantronix lists Gigabit Ethernet switches and routers, Fiber Channel switch infrastructure, xDSL applications and metro edge switching as target uses.
-10°C to 85°C range
The extended operating range covers network closets and equipment rooms that run hotter or colder than typical commercial ratings.
Volume 20-pack
TN-SFP-SX-PK bundles 20 modules for switch deployments that populate many SFP ports at once, such as access-layer refreshes.

How to choose the right TN-SFP-SX Series part number

Both part numbers contain the same 1000Base-SX 850 nm multimode LC module, reaching 220 m on 62.5/125 μm or 550 m on 50/125 μm fiber with an 8.0 dB link budget. TN-SFP-SX is a single module and carries the UL listing. TN-SFP-SX-PK is a pack of 20 TN-SFP-SX modules for larger rollouts. Use the same type of optic at both ends of each link; for single-mode or longer runs, look at Lantronix 1000Base-LX or BiDi SFP families instead.

TN-SFP-SX Series FAQ

How far does the TN-SFP-SX transmit?

The TN-SFP-SX reaches 220 m (722 ft) on 62.5/125 μm multimode fiber and 550 m (1804 ft) on 50/125 μm multimode fiber at 850 nm, with an 8.0 dB link budget.

What is the difference between TN-SFP-SX and TN-SFP-SX-PK?

The optic is identical. TN-SFP-SX is a single 1000Base-SX module and is UL listed, while TN-SFP-SX-PK is a pack of 20 TN-SFP-SX modules intended for deployments that need many transceivers at once.

Is the TN-SFP-SX compatible with standard SFP ports?

The TN-SFP-SX complies with the SFP Multi-Sourcing Agreement (MSA) and IEEE 802.3, and is a hot-pluggable SFP footprint optical transceiver for Gigabit Ethernet and Fiber Channel equipment with standard SFP ports.

What is the operating temperature of the TN-SFP-SX?

The TN-SFP-SX operates from -10°C to 85°C. It draws 0.66 W from a 3.3 V supply and complies with IEC-60825 and FDA 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 laser safety requirements.
