Overview
About the Lantronix C3220 Series
The C3220 (Lantronix ION C3220) is a slide-in module for the ION chassis platform that terminates Gigabit fiber links at the provider or hub end. Each card is a managed Network Interface Device, so it does more than convert media: it monitors the link, supports OAM testing and can manage the stand-alone S3220 at the far end in-band, over the same fiber, removing the need for an IP address at the customer site.
Cards can be managed individually by IP or through the ION Management Module in a managed chassis. Carrier features include MEF 9, 14 and 21 certification, IEEE 802.3ah Link OAM, remote loopback, Far-End-Fault and transparent link pass through. 802.1Q VLANs with double tagging, 802.1p and DiffServ QoS, bandwidth profiling, 802.1X and 10,240-byte frames support business Ethernet and mobile backhaul services.
Each card draws 4.5 W, measures 22 x 165 x 86 mm and takes its power and environmental rating from the ION chassis it is installed in, with a 0°C to 50°C operating range. Management options include web, CLI, SSH, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 and Focal Point.
Key capabilities
- Manages remote S3220 units
- From the chassis, each C3220 manages its paired stand-alone S3220 in-band over the fiber, centralizing control of customer-site NIDs.
- High-density ION platform
- As a slide-in card it shares chassis power and the ION Management Module, so many links terminate in one shelf instead of many power bricks.
- Link OAM and loopback
- IEEE 802.3ah Link OAM, remote loopback and Far-End-Fault let operators test and isolate fiber faults without a truck roll to the far end.
- MEF 9, 14 and 21
- MEF certification and double VLAN tagging with 4096 VIDs support standards-based carrier Ethernet service delivery.
- Low 4.5 W draw
- Each card consumes 4.5 W, keeping heat and power budgets low in a fully populated ION chassis.
How to choose the right C3220 Series part number
All three cards have one 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 port and differ on the fiber side. C3220-1014 has fixed 1000Base-LX 1310 nm single-mode optics on SC connectors for 10 km with a 10.5 dB link budget. C3220-1040 has one empty 100/1000Base-X SFP slot, letting you choose multimode or single-mode reach with the SFP. C3221-1040 has two empty SFP slots. Each card needs an ION chassis such as the ION106 or ION219, and an ION Management Module for chassis-based management.

C3220 Series FAQ
What is the difference between the C3220 and the S3220?
They share the same NID feature set. The C3220 is a slide-in card for an ION chassis, typically at the central office or hub, while the S3220 is a stand-alone unit for the remote site. A C3220 can manage its linked S3220 in-band over the fiber.
Which chassis does the C3220 module fit?
The C3220 is an ION platform module and installs in an ION chassis, such as the 6-slot ION106 or the 19-slot ION219. Its environmental specifications depend on the chassis chosen.
Does the C3220 need an ION Management Module?
It can be managed individually via its own IP address. Installed in a managed ION chassis, it can also be managed by the ION Management Module alongside the other cards in that chassis.
How much power does a C3220 card use?
Each C3220 card consumes 4.5 W, drawn from the ION chassis power supply. The card measures 0.86 x 6.5 x 3.4 inches and weighs 1 lb.
What SFP modules can I use in the C3220-1040?
The C3220-1040 and C3221-1040 have empty 100/1000Base-X SFP slots, so you can install 100 Mbps or Gigabit SFPs for multimode or single-mode fiber. DMI optical management reports diagnostics from the installed SFP.
