The J/RS232 Series are stand-alone serial media converters that carry RS-232 over multimode fiber, extending a serial link from the 15 m copper limit to as far as 2 km between remote devices and a host.

About the Lantronix J/RS232 Series
Conventional RS-232 copper cables top out at about 15 meters. The J/RS232 Series (also written J-RS232) converts a DB-9 serial port to 1300 nm multimode fiber so security scanners, POS devices, remote terminals and building access or alarm systems can reach a host computer across a campus or business site. Links run point to point, with a converter at each end of the fiber.
Each converter supports full- or half-duplex transmission at up to 120 Kbps, complies with EIA/TIA-574 and EIA/TIA RS-232E, and uses an SC fiber connector with an 11.0 dB link budget for distances up to 2 km. The two models differ only in the copper connector: a female DB-9 or a male DB-9. LEDs show power, receive data and a steady fiber link even when no data is moving, which speeds up fiber troubleshooting.
Units are powered by an external 12 VDC, 0.5 A adapter with 120-240 VAC input, draw 3.0 W and operate from 0 to 50 C with storage from -40 to +85 C. The 76 mm wide housing mounts on DIN-rail or wall brackets, or in the RMS19-SA4-02 4-slot shelf and E-MCR-05 12-slot rack.

How to choose the right J/RS232 Series part number
Both part numbers share the same 1300 nm multimode SC fiber port, 2 km reach, 11.0 dB link budget and 120 Kbps data rate. The only difference is the serial connector. J/RS232-CF-01(SC) has a female DB-9 wired as DCE, so it mates with a male DB-9 port. J/RS232-TF-01(SC) has a male DB-9 wired as DTE, so it mates with a female DB-9 port. Check the connector gender and DTE/DCE role of the equipment at each end of the link, since each end can need a different model.

How far can the J/RS232 extend an RS-232 connection?
The copper DB-9 side supports up to 15 m, and the fiber side reaches up to 2 km over 1300 nm multimode fiber with SC connectors and an 11.0 dB link budget. That replaces copper serial runs that would otherwise be limited to about 15 m.
What is the difference between J/RS232-CF-01(SC) and J/RS232-TF-01(SC)?
Only the serial connector differs. The CF model has a female DB-9 (DCE) and the TF model has a male DB-9 (DTE). Fiber type, wavelength, distance, data rate and power requirements are identical.
What data rate does the J/RS232 media converter support?
