About the Lantronix EMG 8500
The EMG 8500 Edge Management Gateway (EMG8500) brings lights-out management to places that have no on-site IT staff and little rack space. It sits next to the routers, switches and firewalls at a branch or remote site and exposes their console ports over Telnet, SSH or an HTML5 web terminal, so administrators can troubleshoot, reconfigure and recover equipment without a truck roll. The chassis measures 8.37 x 6.60 x 1.70 in and weighs at most 3.0 lbs.
Two front slots take customer-replaceable modules: 4-port RS-232 RJ45 at 300 to 921600 bps, 4-port USB console, or a 4-port Ethernet switch. Two rear slots take LTE/4G cellular, Wi-Fi or dial-up modem modules for out-of-band paths. In-band networking is dual Gigabit Ethernet or dual Gb fiber SFP. Automatic failover and failback to LTE supports private APN, VPN and public or private IP addressing, and IPSLA traffic simulation monitors link performance. Each device port has a 256 KB buffer, and cryptography is FIPS 140-2 compliant (Certificate #2398).
The EMG 8500 controls PDUs and UPSs through remote power management, reads Sensorsoft environmental sensors and digital I/O, and runs a StrongSwan IPsec VPN client. It is managed centrally with Lantronix Percepxion for Networking, on-premise or cloud, with iOS and Android access. It runs from 9-30 VDC and operates from 0 to 50 C.

- FIPS 140-2 compliant cryptography (Certificate #2398), TLS up to v1.3, packet filtering, per-port permissions and LDAP/AD, RADIUS, TACACS+ and Kerberos authentication.
How to choose the right EMG 8500 part number
EMG 8500 part numbers follow EMG85 plus three digits and an S suffix. The first digit is device port type (1 = RS-232 RJ45, 2 = USB), the second is port count (0 = 4 ports, 1 = 8 ports, RS-232 only), and the last two set cellular: 00 none, 10 LTE, 20 LTE APAC. EMG851000S is 4 RS-232 ports with no radio; EMG851110S is 8 RS-232 ports with LTE; EMG852020S is 4 USB ports with APAC LTE. Field modules EMGFF01, EMGFF02, EMGFF05 and EMGFR01 to EMGFR04 add ports, Ethernet, LTE, Wi-Fi or a modem later.

EMG 8500 FAQ
Does the EMG 8500 support Wi-Fi or dial-up as an out-of-band path?
Yes. Two rear connectivity slots take customer-replaceable modules for LTE/4G cellular (EMGFR01 US, EMGFR02 APAC), Wi-Fi (EMGFR03) or a dial-up POTS modem (EMGFR04). Two independent Ethernet uplink ports provide further out-of-band options alongside the in-band GbE or SFP ports.
Which EMG 8500 model do I need for LTE in Asia-Pacific?
Choose a part number ending in 20S, such as EMG851020S (4 RS-232 ports), EMG851120S (8 RS-232 ports) or EMG852020S (4 USB ports). Models ending in 10S carry the standard LTE radio, and 00S models have no cellular radio but accept EMGFR01 or EMGFR02 LTE modules later.
How is the EMG 8500 powered?
The EMG 8500 uses an external 9-30 VDC power inlet. Lantronix lists the ACC-520-0164-00 desktop 12V, 100W power supply as a compatible accessory, along with regional power cords for Europe, the UK and Israel.
Can the EMG 8500 be rack mounted?
Yes. It is 1U high with front, mid and rear mounting bracket positions. Lantronix offers the EMG-85SURM-KIT single unit rack mount and the EMG-85DJRM-KIT dual joint rack mount for installing two EMG 8500 units together.
How much storage does the EMG 8500 have for console logs?
It has 1 GB internal NAND flash and 1 GB DRAM, optional 128 GB internal flash, and a microSD slot for up to 128 GB. Port logs can also go to syslog, a USB thumb drive or an NFS share, with 256 KB of buffer per port.
