Lantronix C3110 Series ION Gigabit Ethernet Media Converter Modules

The ION C3110 Series are Gigabit media converter cards for the Lantronix ION chassis platform, converting 1000Base-T copper to 1000Base-SX or LX fiber at Layer 1, with chassis-based management when an ION management module is installed.

Overview

About the Lantronix C3110 Series

The C3110 (also written ION C3110) brings copper-to-fiber Gigabit conversion into a central rack. Each card slides into any ION Platform chassis, so dozens of copper-to-fiber links can share common power and management instead of living as separate stand-alone units. Like other Layer 1 converters it passes data at line speed, which keeps latency minimal, and Lantronix positions it as a way to pair lower-cost 1000Base-T switches with fiber cabling.

Fiber options are 1000Base-SX at 850 nm multimode, reaching 220 m on 62.5/125 µm and 550 m on 50/125 µm fiber, and 1000Base-LX at 1310 nm single-mode to 10 km, plus an empty-SFP version. Hardware switches set Remote Fiber Fault Detect, symmetric and asymmetric pause, Transparent Link Pass Through, fiber auto-negotiation and loopback. The copper port supports auto-MDI/MDIX, and firmware is field upgradeable.

With an ION Management Module in the chassis, the card reports copper and fiber link status, switch settings and receive error counts, and its settings can be changed remotely, including powering the card on or off. A jumper selects whether hardware switches or saved software settings control operation. Each card draws 3.6 W from the chassis backplane.

Key capabilities

ION chassis card
Slides into any ION Platform chassis, consolidating many Gigabit copper-to-fiber conversions into shared rack power and management.
Remote management
With an ION Management Module, report link status and error counts and change auto-negotiation, pause and fault settings remotely.
Layer 1 line speed
Data passes through at line speed at the physical layer, suiting latency-sensitive Gigabit links between copper switches and fiber.
Fault and loopback tools
Remote Fiber Fault Detect, Transparent Link Pass Through and loopback help detect and isolate failures on the fiber segment.
SC, LC or SFP fiber
Choose SC multimode, LC multimode via an installed SFP, SC single-mode to 10 km, or an empty 1000Base-X SFP slot.

How to choose the right C3110 Series part number

All four cards share the same 1000Base-T RJ-45 port and differ on the fiber side. C3110-1013 is 1000Base-SX 850 nm multimode with SC connectors and an 8.5 dB link budget. C3110-1039 is the multimode version with LC connectors via an SFP, with an 8.0 dB budget. Both reach 220 m on 62.5/125 µm and 550 m on 50/125 µm fiber. C3110-1014 is 1000Base-LX 1310 nm single-mode SC to 10 km with a 10.5 dB budget. C3110-1040 has an empty 1000Base-X SFP slot for a separately ordered module.

C3110 Series FAQ

Is the C3110 a managed media converter?

It becomes manageable when installed in an ION Platform chassis with an ION Management Module. The chassis software can then read link status, switch settings and receive error counts, and change settings such as auto-negotiation, pause, link pass-through and power on or off.

Which chassis does the ION C3110 fit?

The C3110 can be used in any ION Platform chassis. It is a slide-in card measuring 22 x 165 x 86 mm and draws 3.6 W from the powered backplane. Environmental ratings depend on the chassis chosen.

What distance does the C3110 support over fiber?

The 1000Base-SX models reach 220 m on 62.5/125 µm and 550 m on 50/125 µm multimode fiber. The C3110-1014 reaches 10 km over single-mode fiber at 1310 nm. With the C3110-1040, distance depends on the SFP module installed.

What is the difference between C3110-1013 and C3110-1039?

Both are 850 nm multimode 1000Base-SX cards with the same distances. C3110-1013 uses fixed SC connectors with an 8.5 dB link budget, while C3110-1039 uses LC connectors via an SFP with an 8.0 dB link budget.
