Overview
About the Lantronix C3210 Series
The C3210 Series (Lantronix ION C3210) is a family of Layer 2 media converter modules for the Lantronix ION platform. Each card bridges one 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 port to one Gigabit fiber port, letting you extend copper Ethernet over multimode or single-mode fiber from a central chassis. Unlike a basic converter, the C3210 also converts rates, so a 10 or 100 Mbps copper device can connect to 1000Base-SX/LX fiber. It works in any ION platform chassis and becomes a managed device in a managed ION chassis.
Features include copper and fiber auto-negotiation, Auto-MDI/MDIX, Link Pass Through, Remote Fault Detect and automatic link restoration. Traffic handling covers 802.1p QoS, IPv4 TOS/DiffServ and IPv6 traffic class prioritization, 802.1Q port VLANs with Q-in-Q double tagging, bandwidth allocation and secure unidirectional transmission. Jumbo frames up to 10,240 bytes are supported. A virtual cable test checks the UTP port, and DMI diagnostics per SFF-8472 and per-port RMON counters aid troubleshooting.
Each card draws 3.6 W from the chassis backplane at 12 VDC. Operating environment depends on the chassis, with the card rated 0°C to 50°C. Firmware is field upgradeable, and hardware DIP switches set auto-negotiation, speed, duplex and Link Pass Through when the card runs unmanaged.
Key capabilities
- Rate conversion
- Connect 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps copper devices to a 1000Base-SX/LX fiber link without a separate switch.
- Managed in ION chassis
- Becomes fully manageable when installed in a managed ION chassis, with field-upgradeable firmware and RMON counters per port.
- VLAN and QoS
- 802.1Q port VLANs with Q-in-Q double tagging, 802.1p and DiffServ prioritization, and bandwidth allocation per port.
- Built-in diagnostics
- Virtual Cable Test on the copper port, Remote Fault Detect, Link Pass Through and SFF-8472 DMI fiber diagnostics.
- 10 KB jumbo frames
- Maximum frame size of 10,240 bytes for jumbo-frame traffic, dropping to 1,632 bytes when linked to an xGFEB10xx-120.
How to choose the right C3210 Series part number
All C3210 cards have one 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 port; the suffix sets the fiber side. C3210-1013 is 1000Base-SX 850 nm multimode on SC, reaching 220 m on 62.5/125 µm and 550 m on 50/125 µm fiber. C3210-1039 is the same SX optic on LC via an SFP. C3210-1014 is 1000Base-LX 1310 nm single-mode on SC for 10 km. C3210-1040 has an empty 1000Base-X SFP slot for any compatible SFP when you need other distances or wavelengths.

C3210 Series FAQ
What fiber distance does each C3210 model support?
C3210-1013 and C3210-1039 (850 nm multimode) reach 220 m on 62.5/125 µm and 550 m on 50/125 µm fiber. C3210-1014 (1310 nm single-mode) reaches 10 km. C3210-1040 distance depends on the SFP installed.
Can the C3210 connect a 100 Mbps device to Gigabit fiber?
Yes. The C3210 performs rate conversion at Layer 2, so legacy 10/100 copper devices can connect to a 1000Base-SX or LX fiber port. The copper port auto-negotiates its speed.
Which chassis does the C3210 fit?
It can be used in any ION platform chassis. It is a manageable device when installed in a managed ION chassis, and operating environment depends on the chassis chosen.
Does the C3210 support VLAN tagging?
Yes. It supports IEEE 802.1Q port VLANs, tagging and Q-in-Q double tagging, plus 802.1p QoS and IPv4 TOS/DiffServ and IPv6 traffic class prioritization. VLAN settings are configurable when managed.
How much power does a C3210 card use?
3.6 W, or 300 mA at 12 VDC, drawn from the ION chassis backplane. Lantronix rates MTBF at greater than 250,000 hours (MIL-HDBK-217F) and greater than 667,500 hours (Bellcore).
