About the Lantronix EDS-MD
Many patient monitors and clinical instruments still talk over RS-232. The EDS-MD (also written EDS MD) puts those serial devices on the hospital network so authorized staff can see and manage them from anywhere. Lantronix designed it specifically for medical environments: it complies with UL and IEC 60601-1, and it goes beyond the 60601 requirement by isolating every port, so a grounding fault does not affect the EDS-MD or the other devices connected to it.
Each unit provides 4, 8 or 16 RJ45 (DTE) RS-232 ports at up to 921 Kbps with 15 kV ESD protection and 1.5 kVAC circuit and port isolation, plus a 10/100/1000 Ethernet network interface and two USB-A host ports. Inside is a 600 MHz ARM 11 processor, 256 MB DRAM, 8 MB flash, a 4 GB internal SD card and a battery-backed real-time clock. Power comes in through an IEC 60320 C14 inlet at 100-240 VAC, with 12 W nominal consumption.
The Secure Com Port Redirector maps virtual COM ports on a host to EDS-MD ports and encrypts both ends, so existing serial applications run unmodified. Security includes SSL/TLS client and server with up to 4096-bit certificates and AES 192/256-bit encryption. Management is through a web browser, CLI over serial, Telnet or SSH, XML configuration records, and Percepxion for centralized cloud or on-premise management. The chassis mounts on a wall or desktop.

How to choose the right EDS-MD part number
The three EDS-MD part numbers differ only in serial port count: EDSOR04P-01 has 4 RS-232 ports, EDSOR08P-01 has 8 and EDSOR16P-01 has 16. All share the same Gigabit Ethernet interface, isolation, software and 21 x 19 x 6 cm footprint; weight runs from 0.8 kg for the 4-port to 0.9 kg for the 16-port. Regional power cords are separate accessories, including hospital-grade US (ACC-930-073-R) and Australian (ACC-930-076-R) cords, and RJ45-to-DB9 or DB25 adapters are available in DTE and DCE wiring.

Is the EDS-MD certified for use in medical environments?
Yes. Lantronix lists UL 60601-1, IEC 60601-1 (2nd edition), EN 60601-1, EN 60601-1-2 for EMC, CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 601.1 and JIS T 0601-1, alongside UL 60950-1 for IT equipment. All ports are galvanically isolated.
How many serial ports does the EDS-MD have?
It is available with 4 (EDSOR04P-01), 8 (EDSOR08P-01) or 16 (EDSOR16P-01) RJ45 DTE RS-232 ports. Each port supports data rates up to 921 Kbps with 15 kV ESD protection and 1.5 kVAC isolation.
Do existing serial applications work with the EDS-MD?
Yes. Lantronix Secure Com Port Redirector creates virtual COM ports on the host that map to EDS-MD serial ports, with encryption at both ends. Existing serial port applications work without code modifications.
What are the EDS-MD power and operating temperature specs?
It takes 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz through an IEC 60320 C14 inlet without a power switch, drawing 12 W nominal and 23 W maximum. Operating temperature is 0 °C to 50 °C at 20% to 90% non-condensing humidity, with an IP20 rating.
Can the EDS-MD be managed centrally?
Yes. It supports Lantronix Percepxion for cloud or on-premise device management, plus a web browser interface with SSL login, CLI over serial, Telnet or SSH, SNMP v2/v3 and XML configuration records via CLI or FTP.
