Overview
About the Lantronix TN-GLC-BX Series
A 1000Base-BX bidirectional SFP sends and receives on different wavelengths over one fiber, halving the strands a Gigabit link consumes. That matters where fiber is leased per strand, where a duplex run would exceed available fiber, or where a building has only one spare strand. The TN-GLC-BX Series (also written TN GLC BX) packages this as Cisco-compatible modules with LC simplex connectors, so they fit Gigabit SFP ports on Cisco switches and other SFP-based equipment.
Each link needs one U and one D module with mirrored wavelengths. The 10, 20 and 40 km versions pair 1310 nm and 1490 nm, while the 80 km versions pair 1490 nm and 1550 nm. Link budgets scale with reach: 10.0 dB at 10 km, 11.0 dB at 20 km, 20.0 dB at 40 km and 26.0 dB at 80 km. Every module includes DMI for real-time optical diagnostics.
The modules draw 0.66 W from 3.3 V, operate from 0°C to 70°C and comply with IEC-60825 and FDA 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 laser safety. The 10 and 20 km models are UL listed, and the series is listed as TAA compliant. Each module measures 13 x 55 x 8 mm and conforms to IEEE 802.3, and installation is covered in the Lantronix Various SFPs (33480) user guide.
Key capabilities
- One fiber per link
- 1000Base-BX transmits and receives on separate wavelengths over a single single-mode fiber, freeing the second strand of a duplex pair.
- Cisco compatible
- TN-GLC-BX modules are built as Cisco-compatible Gigabit SFPs, for Gigabit SFP ports on Cisco equipment as well as other SFP-based switches and media converters.
- 10 to 80 km reach
- Four reach classes, 10, 20, 40 and 80 km, with link budgets from 10.0 dB up to 26.0 dB for long rural or metro spans.
- DMI on every module
- Digital monitoring interface support reports optical and operating parameters so link degradation can be spotted from the host switch.
- Low power draw
- Each module consumes 0.66 W from a 3.3 V supply, keeping thermal load low in densely populated switch line cards.
How to choose the right TN-GLC-BX Series part number
Pick the reach, then order one U and one D module for each link. U models transmit on the shorter wavelength: TN-GLC-BX-U (10 km), TN-GLC-BX-U-20 and TN-GLC-BX-U-40 transmit at 1310 nm and receive at 1490 nm. The matching D models, TN-GLC-BX-D, -D-20 and -D-40, do the reverse. For 80 km, TN-GLC-BX-U-80 transmits 1490 nm and receives 1550 nm, paired with TN-GLC-BX-D-80. The suffix sets distance: none for 10 km, -20, -40 or -80. UL listing applies to the 10 and 20 km parts.

TN-GLC-BX Series FAQ
What is the difference between TN-GLC-BX-U and TN-GLC-BX-D?
They are the two ends of one link. TN-GLC-BX-U transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1490 nm, while TN-GLC-BX-D transmits at 1490 nm and receives at 1310 nm. A working link always needs one U and one D module.
Can I use two TN-GLC-BX-U modules on the same fiber link?
No. Both modules would transmit on the same wavelength and listen on a wavelength nobody is sending. Order a U and a D of the same reach, for example TN-GLC-BX-U-40 with TN-GLC-BX-D-40.
How far can TN-GLC-BX SFPs transmit?
Versions are available for 10 km (10.0 dB budget), 20 km (11.0 dB), 40 km (20.0 dB) and 80 km (26.0 dB), all over single-mode fiber with LC connectors.
Do TN-GLC-BX transceivers support DDM/DMI?
Yes. Every TN-GLC-BX module, from the 10 km TN-GLC-BX-U to the 80 km TN-GLC-BX-D-80, includes DMI. The host switch can read optical and operating diagnostics for each port, which helps spot fiber degradation before a link fails.
What is the operating temperature of TN-GLC-BX SFPs?
TN-GLC-BX modules operate from 0°C to 70°C and can be stored from -40°C to 85°C. They are commercial-temperature transceivers drawing 0.66 W at 3.3 V.
