About the Lantronix xPico Wi-Fi
xPico Wi-Fi (also written xPico WiFi) gives OEM designers a complete Wi-Fi device server in a 24 x 16.5 x 5.64 mm module weighing 2.5 g. It is based on the Cypress WICED platform and runs full IP and WLAN stacks on board, so the host microcontroller needs no Wi-Fi drivers. Lantronix calls this zero host load. The module meets FCC Class B, UL and EN EMC requirements, which cuts certification work for the end product.
The radio supports IEEE 802.11 b/g and single-stream 802.11n at 2.4 GHz, with WPA-Personal and WPA2-Personal security. An ARM Cortex M3 class processor with 1 MB flash, 128 KB SRAM and 1 MB SPI flash runs the stack. Host options are two 3.3 V serial CMOS ports at 300 to 921.6 Kbps, SPI, USB 2.0 device and 8 GPIO. It runs from 3.3 VDC, draws about 6 μA in standby and operates from -40 to +85°C.
Simultaneous Soft AP and client mode is the defining feature. A headless product can join the site WLAN while also hosting its own access point with a DHCP server, so installers configure it from a smartphone or browser. Management includes a web landing page, serial CLI, XML configuration import and export, and OTA firmware updates.

- The module joins an existing access point while also serving its own Soft AP with DHCP, letting users set up headless products from a phone or browser.
- Zero host load
- Full IP and WLAN stacks run on the module, so the connected microcontroller needs no Wi-Fi drivers and integration requires little or no host code.
- Two mounting options
- Choose the original 40-pin board-to-board connector module or the xPico Wi-Fi SMT version for direct surface mounting, with or without an on-module antenna.
- Extended temperature range
- Rated for -40 to +85°C operation and storage. A thermal pad, sold as XPC100A002-01-B, is required for operation above +70°C.
- Low-power 3.3 V design
- The module runs from a 3.3 VDC supply and draws approximately 6 μA in standby, suiting battery-sensitive and always-on IoT designs.
- Pre-certified radio
- FCC Class B, UL and EN EMC and Japan certifications reduce the regulatory testing an OEM product needs before release.
How to choose the right xPico Wi-Fi part number
Pick the form factor first. XPW100100B-01 is the board-to-board connector module in bulk, XPW100100S-01 is a sample and XPW100100K-01 is its evaluation kit. The SMT line splits by antenna: XPCW1002100B uses an external antenna via U.FL, while XPCW1003100B has an on-module antenna (XPCW1003100S is its sample). XPCW1002100K and XPCW1003100K are the matching SMT evaluation kits. TWR-LTRX-XPWK is a Freescale Tower System module. Accessories include the XPC100A001-01-B mounting quick clip, XPC100A002-01-B thermal pad, U.FL antenna cables and antennas.

Does xPico Wi-Fi support 5 GHz?
No. The xPico Wi-Fi module supports IEEE 802.11 b/g and single-stream 802.11n on the 2.4 GHz band only. Some optional antennas in the accessory list cover 2.4 and 5 GHz, but the module radio itself operates at 2.4 GHz.
What is the difference between XPCW1002 and XPCW1003?
Both are xPico Wi-Fi SMT modules with extended temperature ratings. XPCW1002100B connects to an external antenna through U.FL, while XPCW1003100B includes an on-module antenna. Each has its own evaluation kit, XPCW1002100K and XPCW1003100K.
What host interfaces does xPico Wi-Fi support?
The module offers two serial CMOS ports (3.3 V, 5 V tolerant) at 300 to 921.6 Kbps with XON/XOFF or RTS/CTS flow control on port 1, plus SPI, USB 2.0 device and 8 GPIO.
Does the xPico Wi-Fi need a thermal pad?
Only above +70°C. The module is rated from -40 to +85°C, and Lantronix requires a thermal pad for operation over +70°C. The XPC100A002-01-B thermal pad is offered in a 50-piece bulk pack.
What security does xPico Wi-Fi support?
It supports IEEE 802.11i with WPA-Personal and WPA2-Personal, and Lantronix lists 256-bit AES encryption. Configuration is available through a web landing page, serial CLI and XML import and export.
