Overview

About the Lantronix xPico 240

The xPico 240 (part numbers beginning XPC240) lets OEMs add managed Wi-Fi and Ethernet to an industrial product without writing network drivers. It handles the full network stack and connection management, so a host microcontroller simply talks to it over a TTL UART or USB. Concurrent Soft AP plus client mode allows a technician to connect directly to the device for service while it stays on the plant network, which matters for machines that cannot be taken offline.

The radio supports 802.11a/b/g at up to 54 Mbps and 802.11n 1x1 at up to 150 Mbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, with 802.11r fast roaming and WPA2-Enterprise (EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, EAP-PEAP, EAP-FAST). Ethernet is 10Base-T/100Base-TX over RMII. The UART runs from 9600 bps to 4 Mbps, and 12 GPIOs are available. TruPort Serial passes proprietary serial and fieldbus protocols transparently, TruPort Socket manages multiple TCP, UDP or TLS connections, and a Modbus TCP to RTU/ASCII gateway is built in.

InfiniShield security provides secure boot, secure firmware-over-the-air updates, encrypted configuration, secure key storage and role-based access control. The module runs from 3.3 VDC and operates from -40 °C to +85 °C. Deployed devices are managed through the Percepxion cloud platform, REST, MQTT, XML configuration and status records, or the internal HTTPS web server.

Converts Modbus TCP to Modbus RTU or ASCII on the module, alongside TruPort Serial pass-through for proprietary and fieldbus protocols.

How to choose the right xPico 240 part number

The digits after XPC240 set form factor and antenna: XPC240100 is the 17 x 25 x 2 mm LGA module with dual u.FL connectors, XPC240200 is LGA with an on-module antenna, XPC240300 is the 22 x 35.5 mm edge-card version with dual u.FL, and XPC240400 is edge-card with an on-module antenna. The S or B suffix sets packaging: LGA parts come on tape and reel of 25 (XPC240100S-02) or 250 (XPC240100B-02); edge-card parts come singly (XPC240300S-02) or in trays (XPC240300B-02). Start development with the XPC240300EK evaluation kit.

xPico 240 FAQ

What is the difference between the xPico 240 LGA and edge-card versions?

The LGA version is a 17 x 25 x 2 mm surface-mount module supplied on tape and reel, MSL 3. The edge-card version measures 22 x 35.5 x 2.73 mm and plugs into an edge connector, supplied singly or in trays. Both share the same radio, Ethernet and software.

Which xPico 240 should I choose: u.FL or on-module antenna?

Choose XPC240100 or XPC240300 for dual u.FL connectors when you need external antennas or antenna diversity, for example inside metal enclosures. Choose XPC240200 or XPC240400 for an on-module antenna when the device housing allows the module to radiate directly.

What host interfaces does the xPico 240 provide?

It provides a TTL UART at 9600 bps to 4 Mbps with RTS/CTS and XON/XOFF flow control, USB host, 12 programmable GPIOs, an RMII 10/100 Ethernet interface, and RESET, DEFAULT and WAKE system pins.

What power does the xPico 240 require?

It runs from a single 3.3 VDC supply, with a maximum boot peak current of 580 mA and a standby current of 30 µA, so the host board's regulator should be sized for the boot peak rather than average draw.

Is there an evaluation kit for the xPico 240?

Yes. The XPC240300EK evaluation kit supports dual-band Wi-Fi and Ethernet development. Lantronix also lists XPC250300EK and XPC270300EK kits for the related xPico 250 and xPico 270, which add Bluetooth 4.2.
