Overview

About the Lantronix C2110 Series

The C2110 Series (often listed as ION C2110) puts Fast Ethernet copper-to-fiber conversion into the ION chassis, so many links can be terminated, powered and managed from one rack shelf instead of a row of stand-alone converters. Each card links a 100Base-TX RJ-45 port to a 100Base-FX fiber port at Layer 1 and works with any standards-based 100Base-TX and 100Base-FX equipment at the other end.

Fiber options cover 1300 nm multimode to 2 km on ST, SC or LC, 1310 nm single-mode to 20 km on SC or LC, and an empty 100Base-X SFP slot. The copper port auto-negotiates speed and duplex and supports auto-MDI/MDIX. Link Pass Through, Far-End Fault detection and automatic link restoration propagate faults across the link, and a four-position switch sets auto-negotiation, pause, LPT and FEF. Each card draws 2.7 W from the chassis backplane.

Installed with an ION Management Module, each card reports copper and fiber link status, port speed and duplex, hardware switch settings and fault conditions to the chassis management software. Administrators can also power the card on or off and change auto-negotiation, duplex, LPT, FEF, pause and auto-MDI/MDIX remotely. Firmware is field upgradeable.

Key capabilities

Single-mode to 20 km
C2110-1014 (SC) and C2110-1019 (LC) run 1310 nm single-mode fiber to 20 km, with link budgets of 16.0 dB and 17.3 dB.
Multimode in three connectors
1300 nm multimode models reach 2 km with an 11.0 dB budget on ST (C2110-1011), SC (C2110-1013) or LC (C2110-1039).
Remote management through IONMM
With an ION Management Module, each card reports link and fault status and accepts remote changes to duplex, LPT, FEF, pause and power.
Fault propagation
Link Pass Through and Far-End Fault detection carry a fiber or copper failure across the link so switches at both ends see it.
Low power, long MTBF
Each card draws 2.7 W (230 mA at 12 VDC) and Lantronix rates MTBF above 250,000 hours (MIL-HDBK-217F).

How to choose the right C2110 Series part number

All six C2110 cards share the 100Base-TX RJ-45 port and management features; the last four digits set the fiber side. For multimode at 1300 nm and up to 2 km, choose C2110-1011 (ST), C2110-1013 (SC) or C2110-1039 (LC). For single-mode at 1310 nm and up to 20 km, choose C2110-1014 (SC, 16.0 dB) or C2110-1019 (LC, 17.3 dB). C2110-1040 has an empty 100Base-X SFP slot for other wavelengths or distances. Match connector type to the patch panel and the far-end device.

C2110 Series FAQ

Which chassis does the C2110 media converter card fit?

The C2110 can be used in any ION platform chassis. Manageable features such as remote status reporting and configuration require the card to be installed in an ION chassis together with an ION Management Module.

How far can the C2110 transmit over fiber?

Multimode models reach up to 2 km at 1300 nm with an 11.0 dB link budget. Single-mode models reach up to 20 km at 1310 nm, with 16.0 dB (SC) or 17.3 dB (LC) budgets. The C2110-1040 distance depends on the SFP installed.

Will the C2110 link with other vendors' 100Base-FX equipment?

Yes. Lantronix describes the C2110 as standards based: it will link with any standard 100Base-TX port on the copper side and any standard 100Base-FX port on the fiber side, provided fiber type, wavelength and connector match.

What can be configured on the C2110 without management software?

A four-position switch sets auto-negotiation, pause, Link Pass Through and Far-End Fault, and an internal jumper enables or disables auto-MDI/MDIX. With an ION Management Module, the most recently saved software settings determine the mode of operation.
