About the Lantronix IONMM Series
An ION Management Module is required to use the full feature set of ION slide-in media converter cards. The IONMM (also written ION MM) connects to the chassis backplane and talks to each card, so a network administrator can configure, monitor and troubleshoot modules remotely instead of dispatching a technician. Only management traffic crosses the backplane; no end-user data does. Proactive traps and alerts shorten mean time to repair.
The module occupies a single chassis slot, leaving more slots for converter cards. It has two 10/100 Mbps RJ-45 Ethernet interfaces and supports management VLAN, TLS/SSL, SSH, IEEE 802.1X/RADIUS, SNMP v1, v2c and v3, ACL rules, multiple community strings and SNTP. Configuration files import and export in a human-readable, editable format, and TFTP handles firmware upgrade and backup of slide-in modules.
Access is by web browser, CLI over telnet or the local console port, or any standard SNMP NMS such as SNMPc or HPOV, since the platform is based on public MIBs. Lantronix also offers Focal Point, a free SNMP GUI with read and read/write access.

- TFTP upgrade and backup
- Slide-in module firmware is upgraded and backed up over TFTP, and configuration files export in a human-readable, editable format.
How to choose the right IONMM Series part number
The two module part numbers differ only in local console port. IONMM provides a USB Type-B CLI port plus a USB 2.0 host port that can supply 2.5 W to a device such as a flash drive. IONMM-232 replaces the USB host port with an RS-232 RJ-45 port for the CLI; the Cable-CCC-06 Cisco DB9 to RJ-45 console cable is listed as a compatible accessory. Both have two 10/100 RJ-45 ports. Chassis are separate: ION219 (19 slots), ION106 (6 slots) and ION002-AD (2 slots), with ION219-AAMB and ION106-AAMB bundling an IONMM and dual AC supplies.

Do I need an IONMM to use an ION chassis?
Lantronix states that an ION Management Module is required to take full advantage of the features and functions of the ION chassis. Without it, slide-in cards cannot be configured, monitored or troubleshot remotely through the backplane.
What is the difference between IONMM and IONMM-232?
Both have two 10/100 Mbps RJ-45 Ethernet ports and a USB 2.0 device port. The IONMM adds a USB 2.0 host port and uses a USB Type-B CLI port, while the IONMM-232 provides an RS-232 RJ-45 port for CLI access instead.
Which chassis are compatible with the IONMM module?
The IONMM installs in ION platform chassis, including the 19-slot ION219, the 6-slot ION106 and the 2-slot ION002-AD. ION219-AAMB and ION106-AAMB ship with dual AC power supplies and one ION Management Module already included.
How much power does the ION management module draw?
The IONMM draws 2 W under normal operation and up to 4.8 W when a USB host device, such as a flash drive, uses the full 2.5 W available from the USB host port. Operating range is 0 to 50 C, depending on the chassis.
