About the Lantronix M/GE-UxX Series
The M/GE-UxX Series (also written M-GE-UxX, as in M-GE-PSW-SFP-01-UTX) combines a copper-to-fiber media converter with unidirectional transmission, the function often called a data diode or unidirectional security gateway. It connects networks with different security classifications so data can flow from a classified, high-security area to a low-security one without anything flowing back, or so a secure network can receive external updates while its own data cannot leave. Every link needs a transmit-only converter paired with a receive-only converter.
Each unit converts a 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 port with auto-negotiation and auto-MDI/MDIX to an empty SFP slot that accepts dual-speed 100/1000 Mbps modules. Converters use standard duplex SFPs, but the transmitter activates only the SFP TX port and the receiver only the RX port, so simplex operation needs a single fiber strand. Jumbo frames are supported, and the unit draws 1.8 W without the SFP.
Commercial -PSW models run from 0 to 50 C on 4.5 to 14 VDC through a barrel connector. Hardened -ISW models run from -40 to 75 C on 12 to 48 VDC or 24 to 36 VAC via a terminal block, and -PD versions draw IEEE 802.3af PoE from the copper port. Unit and port LEDs show power, fiber link and copper link status.

- Each converter measures 46 x 85 x 22 mm and fits Lantronix mini wall and DIN-rail brackets; non-hardened models also fit the M-MCR-01 chassis.
How to choose the right M/GE-UxX Series part number
Every part number ends in UTX (transmitting) or URX (receiving), and a link needs one of each. PSW models such as M/GE-PSW-SFP-01-UTX are commercial units, 0 to 50 C, powered by 4.5 to 14 VDC through a barrel connector. ISW models such as M/GE-ISW-SFP-01-URX are hardened for -40 to 75 C with a 2-pin terminal block for 12 to 48 VDC or 24 to 36 VAC. The -PD variants, M/GE-ISW-SFP-01-PD-UTX and -PD-URX, take IEEE 802.3af PoE through the RJ-45 port. All models ship with an empty SFP slot.

How does a unidirectional media converter work?
A transmit-only converter (UTX) is paired with a receive-only converter (URX). Both use standard duplex SFP modules, but the transmitter uses only the SFP TX port with RX deactivated, and the receiver uses only RX with TX deactivated. Data can travel over the fiber in one direction only.
Do I need one fiber strand or two for the M/GE-UxX?
One. Because communication is simplex, a single strand of fiber connects the transmitting converter's SFP TX port to the receiving converter's SFP RX port. The unused port on each duplex SFP is deactivated.
Which SFP modules work with M/GE-UxX converters?
The open SFP slot accepts dual-speed 100/1000 Mbps duplex SFP modules. Fiber mode, wavelength and maximum distance are set by the module you install, so choose the SFP to match your fiber plant and link length.
