Overview

About the Lantronix SMTATSA Series

The SMTATSA Series (also listed as the SMxTAT2SA Series) is a family of Layer 2 smart managed Gigabit Ethernet switches that power and connect IP surveillance cameras, wireless access points and similar devices from one fanless 1U chassis. Each model pairs 10/100/1000Base-T PoE+ ports with two 100/1000Base-X SFP slots for fiber or copper uplinks, so a camera or Wi-Fi closet can be fed from a distant core over fiber.

PoE is compliant with IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at, delivering up to 30 W per port. The SM8TAT2SA has a 130 W budget, the SM16TAT2SA 250 W and the SM24TAT2SA 370 W, with backplanes of 20, 36 and 52 Gbps. Switching features include 802.1Q VLANs with up to 4k entries, QinQ and private VLANs, LACP trunking, MSTP/RSTP/STP, IGMP and MLD snooping, eight QoS queues, L2/L3/L4 ACLs, RADIUS and TACACS+, DHCP snooping, and 9K jumbo frames. Auto Power Reset and Always on PoE help keep powered devices online.

Management runs over the web GUI, CLI, Telnet and SNMP v1/v2c/v3. The built-in Device Management System (DMS) adds topology, floor and map views, traffic monitoring and network diagnostics, and the switches integrate with the Lantronix Percepxion cloud platform for fleet-level device management. Operating range is 0°C to +50°C on 100-240 VAC input with 6KV surge protection.

Key capabilities

Three PoE+ budgets
Choose 130 W (8 ports), 250 W (16 ports) or 370 W (24 ports); every model can run 30 W on half its ports or 15.4 W on all of them.
Two SFP uplinks
Every model adds two 100/1000Base-X SFP slots, so you can run a fiber uplink to the core without a separate media converter.
Built-in DMS
The Device Management System draws topology, floor and map views of connected IP devices and provides traffic monitoring and network diagnostics from the local web manager or Percepxion.
PoE recovery tools
Auto Power Reset and Always on PoE help keep cameras and access points powered, alongside per-port PoE configuration.
Enterprise Layer 2 features
802.1Q VLANs with up to 4k entries, QinQ, private VLANs, LACP, MSTP, IGMP/MLD snooping, eight QoS queues and RADIUS/TACACS+ authentication.
Fanless 1U chassis
Fan-less design with 19-inch rack-mount brackets included, 100-240 VAC input and 6KV surge protection. Each switch also has an 8K MAC address table.

How to choose the right SMTATSA Series part number

Part numbers follow SM{ports}TAT2SA-{region}. The number sets the copper port count and PoE budget: SM8TAT2SA (8 ports, 130 W, half-width 220 mm chassis), SM16TAT2SA (16 ports, 250 W) and SM24TAT2SA (24 ports, 370 W), all with two SFP slots. The suffix selects the power cord shipped in the box: -NA North America, -EU Europe, -UK United Kingdom, -JP Japan, -OZ Australia/NZ, -BR Brazil, plus -LA and -SA. For example, SM24TAT2SA-NA is the 24-port model with a North American cord and SM8TAT2SA-EU the 8-port model with a European cord. Hardware and features are otherwise identical across suffixes.

SMTATSA Series FAQ

What is the PoE budget of the SM8TAT2SA, SM16TAT2SA and SM24TAT2SA?

The SM8TAT2SA has a 130 W budget (30 W on 4 ports or 15.4 W on 8), the SM16TAT2SA 250 W (30 W on 8 or 15.4 W on 16) and the SM24TAT2SA 370 W (30 W on 12 or 15.4 W on 24).

Are SMTATSA switches Layer 2 or Layer 3?

They are Layer 2 smart managed switches. They support VLANs, QinQ, LACP, spanning tree, IGMP and MLD snooping, QoS and L2/L3/L4 ACLs, and the source lists no IP routing features. Management is via web GUI, CLI and SNMP.

What operating temperature are SMTATSA switches rated for?

The SMTATSA Series is rated for 0°C to +50°C operation and 10% to 90% non-condensing humidity, which suits wiring closets and indoor equipment rooms rather than outdoor cabinets.

How are SMTATSA switches managed?

Through the web GUI, CLI, Telnet and SNMP v1/v2c/v3, with firmware updates over TFTP and HTTP. The built-in DMS adds topology, floor and map views, and the switches integrate with the Lantronix Percepxion cloud platform.

What does the region suffix on an SMTATSA part number mean?

The suffix, such as -NA, -EU, -UK, -JP, -OZ or -BR, identifies the AC power cord included with the switch. Ports, PoE budget and features are the same; rack-mount brackets ship with every model.
