Overview
About the Lantronix TN-SFP-10G BX Series
These SFP+ modules transmit and receive on different wavelengths over one fiber strand, so a 10G link needs half the fiber of a duplex connection. That matters wherever fiber strands are scarce, including metro edge switching. Each link uses one U module at one end and one D module, with mirrored wavelengths, at the other. Lantronix lists the family, which it names TN-SFP-10G-x-xx, as Cisco compatible for 10G Ethernet switches and routers.
Four reaches are offered. The 10, 20 and 40 km pairs use 1270 nm and 1330 nm, with link budgets of 5.9, 12.1 and 16.0 dB. The 80 km pair moves to 1490 nm and 1550 nm with a 23.0 dB budget. All are 10G SFP+ MSA compliant with simplex LC connectors and SFF-8472 digital diagnostics (DMI), so compatible hosts can monitor the optics. Each module runs on a single +3.3V supply and operates from 0 to 70 C.
Each module measures 13 x 55 x 8 mm (0.52 x 2.18 x 0.33 in) in the standard SFP+ MSA form factor. The series complies with IEEE 802.3ae and with IEC-60825 and FDA 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 laser safety requirements, and the modules are RoHS compliant. Output wavelength tolerance is -5.5 nm to +7.5 nm around the center wavelength.
Key capabilities
- One fiber per 10G link
- 10GBase-BX bidirectional optics send and receive over a single single-mode strand, halving fiber use compared with duplex 10G links.
- 10 to 80 km reach
- Matched pairs for 10 km (5.9 dB), 20 km (12.1 dB), 40 km (16.0 dB) and 80 km (23.0 dB) link budgets.
- Cisco compatible
- Lantronix lists the series as Cisco compatible 10GBase SFP+ modules for 10G Ethernet switches, routers and metro edge equipment.
- SFF-8472 DMI
- SFF-8472 digital diagnostic monitoring reports transceiver status to compatible host switches, helping troubleshoot fiber links without extra test gear.
- MSA-standard SFP+
- 10G SFP+ MSA compliant modules with LC connectors, a single +3.3V supply and 0 to 70 C operating range.
How to choose the right TN-SFP-10G BX Series part number
Part numbers read TN-SFP-10G, then U or D, then reach in km. U and D are the two halves of a BiDi pair and must be used opposite each other: TN-SFP-10G-U-20 transmits 1270 nm and receives 1330 nm, while TN-SFP-10G-D-20 does the reverse. Order one U and one D of the same reach per link, choosing 10, 20, 40 or 80 by fiber distance and loss budget. The 80 km pair, TN-SFP-10G-U-80 and TN-SFP-10G-D-80, uses 1490/1550 nm instead of 1270/1330 nm, so it cannot pair with the shorter-reach modules.

TN-SFP-10G BX Series FAQ
What is the difference between TN-SFP-10G-U and TN-SFP-10G-D modules?
They are opposite ends of one BiDi link. For 10 to 40 km, U modules transmit at 1270 nm and receive at 1330 nm, and D modules do the reverse. For 80 km, U transmits 1490 nm and D transmits 1550 nm. Always install a U at one end and a D at the other.
Can I pair a TN-SFP-10G-U-40 with a TN-SFP-10G-D-80?
No. The 10, 20 and 40 km modules use 1270/1330 nm while the 80 km modules use 1490/1550 nm, so their wavelengths do not match. Pair U and D modules of the same reach, for example TN-SFP-10G-U-40 with TN-SFP-10G-D-40.
Are TN-SFP-10G BX modules Cisco compatible?
Lantronix describes this series as Cisco compatible 10GBase SFP+ modules. They are 10G SFP+ MSA compliant and support SFF-8472 digital diagnostics for use in 10G Ethernet switches and routers.
What fiber and connector do these 10G BiDi SFP+ modules use?
All models use single-mode fiber with a simplex LC connector, carrying both directions on one strand. Link budgets range from 5.9 dB for 10 km modules to 23.0 dB for 80 km modules.
What is the operating temperature of the TN-SFP-10G BX Series?
The modules operate from 0 to 70 C and can be stored from -40 to 85 C. They draw power from the host's single +3.3V supply.
